It's up to your insurance company. Ask them.

I just got back from a week vacation on LBI, and after reading all the posts I missed, it seems like there have been a ton of accidents lately!!! I've gotten in a bunch of accidents. Most of them were rear-ends but 2 have been pretty bad. My last big one totaled my '95 GLE. Maybe the Max is bad luck?

when the insurance company deems it too expensive to be fix than what the car is worth..

so you could own a $5000 car with $4000 damage and you reported to your insurance company and now its salvage..

or you could own a $5000 car with $7000 worth of damage then fix it yourself without reporting it.. and its NOT considered salvage

Oh yeah totally...it was the sweetest accident ever ....not that I condone accidents or anything. I hit a trailer hitch from an 18-wheeler at like 60 mph. My car jumped like 2 or 3 feet in the air and bounced 3 times before coming to a stop mere inches from the guardrail. My oil pan was pierced and all the oil leaked out. The engine ran long enough without oil to destroy it. There were some other miscellaneous damages, and by the end of it all the car was totaled. Our insurance company gave us back almost all of the money for the car, and I found a sweet 97 SE with less miles, which I have now.

Usually when the cost of repairing the car exceeds 75% of the total value of the car in is deemed a total lose.
