Rotors have rust

I have set of 17inch Omni N7 rims on my 95 gxe. The spokes are pretty thin so you can see all of my rotor. Now there are different spots (not on the rotor part where the brake pads meet it) where rust has developed and it looks really bad. I've wiped it off before with a soapy rag and wire brush but it returned quickly. Is there something I can put on that metal to keep it from rustng? WD40?

thanks.

when you say not on the rotor but where the brake pad is do you mean the caliper?

Bare cast iron + oxygen + water + lots of heat = rust

Not much you can do about it...

Yup. The rim of the rotor and hub (where the wheel meets the rotor) are all ways going to be rusty with OEM rotors. You can paint them but it will still come back.

Try coating the hub area with a thin coat of anti-seize. I used that when I installed my new rims since they show a lot more of the rotor and expose more of the hub area. It works great. I don't know if you can use it directly on the "unswept area" of the rotor though.

Some aftermarket rotors like Stealin or Brembo have a cadmium plating on them to prevent rust. They are usually less than $75 each.

I have had pretty good sucess painting the rusty areas with high temperature engine paint; 500 deg. paint is usually good enough unless you race on a road course. Just make sure thatt you remove all of the loose rust with a wire brush, wipe it down with laquer thinner, and mask off the friction surfaces.

To speed drying, I bake mine in the oven at 275 deg. for an hour. Make sure that you burn off all of the vapors when you are done. I remove the parts and turn it up to 600 deg. for 15 minutes. If you don't, your wife's next meatloaf will taste like Krylon.

Stillen Rotors

SWEEET

For just under 500 bucks you can make all 4 corners look like this.

Say bye bye rust, hello brakes!

Hahahahah, I was waiting for your post. I read this thread and I immedately thought, its only a matter of time before njmaxseltd shows us what's up. I really love those cross-drilled rotors, they are beautiful. Someday I aspire to own a set of my own.

There's a company making colored aluminum covers for the hub area. Saw them in a magazine once, but I have no idea where to buy them (or they'd be on my car).

So Do these rotors look so yellow in person. I've been wantin a set for a while now, but I keep hesitating because I don't like the yelloish tint/look to it. I've seen other that look like that nice chrome, kind of like the rims.

Thats how they look out of the box. The rotors are Zinc plated so they don't rust.

Once you start to use them, the area where the pad swipes will turn silver. The Zinc plating comes right off. So your left with Zinc plating on the hub area and on the edges of the rotor.

My Stillen rotors just arrived this afternoon. They are gold zinc plated to prevent rust. They do not look as yellow as the top picture but look exactly like the picture as seen through the Konig rims. As mentioned above that coloring will disappear as the rotors are "seasoned"- meaning broken in.
