anyone know alot about the vq???

I have a 98 se and I've been shopping around for mods to do this winter. I think i want the JWT cams if they put out some alright numbers.(1100 $ is alot for cams). I've also been thinking about upgrading some other internals. I want to stay naturally aspirated because all the really fast maximas have sc or nos, and I want to be a fast N/A. One of the things I was thinking of doing is upgrading to higher compession pistons. If I was to do this would the valves be able to hold the increased cylender pressure? What do you think I should go compression wise? And my finall question, my engine has about 70 000 miles on it if I was to replace the pistons could I start using synthetic or is the engine to old end of story?

Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanx Chris

Most people who build their engine seem to import parts from the VQ30DET from Japan.

And I would think 70k is just when this engine is getting broken in. I've never heard of anyone having a VQ blow (unless they did something stupid/wrong) before 100k, even just using Dyno oil and such.

the VQ30DET uses lower compression, about 9:1 if I remeber correctly. I'm sure that for enough $$, JWT could cook you up some 11:1 pistons and and ECU to go with them...

It's also not a chevy 350. Without something drastic like SC or TC you're not going to find a lot of "hidden" horsepower just by swapping cams and bumping compression.....

Re: anyone know alot about the vq???

All you questions can be answered by calling JWT or engine builders with lot of experience in Nissan engines. Also if you can't put up $4k for motor work don't even think about going hardcore NA. Custom pistons, install, motor work + cams aren't cheap. Judging from your post I bet you wouldn't be able to do the work so that adds around $1.5-3k in labor to assemble the motor.

IIRC nobody actually has a DET in their Max. Rather the head portion of the block from the DET on their VQ30DE. Even Tilley. But I could be wrong.
