Exhaust swap question!

Hey all,
I pulled a custom 2.5" cat back exhaust system with a Magnaflow muffler off of a whrecked 97 Maxima. I have a 96 i30. I got under the car and lined everything up, and it looks like the 97 might have had a longer cat or the cat was placed further back by about 4 inches. Can anyone confirm this? I could just have a muffler shop extend that tube by a few inches. Also, on this custom tubing, there is not a big cylinder thingy that is on the factory piping after the cat. Is that a resonator? With the 2.5" tubing and presumably no resonator, will I be louder than hell? If so I may cut the muffler off of the custom tubing and put it on my stock tubing.

Feedback please, help a guy out!

Only thing I can anwser is that it sounds like the salvaged cat-back has no resanotor. (The large diameter tube after the cat).
It may be damn loud, I have not heard a magnaflow on a max before.
I say install the sucker.

You seem to always come across good deals!

Hey, did you get the "t" in the mail. Just wondering because I sent it like almost 2 weeks ago. Let me know.

I just go 20% tint all the way around. Whooopeee!

Mike,
Ya, I got the "t"! Thanks a bunch! Forgot to tell you that it came. I think I will try it with the 2.5" tubing, and if it is too loud I will yank it. Lots of people like the magnaflow on the Max.

Yes, that "big cylinder thingy" on the stock exhaust is a resonator.

No resonator + magnaflow muff = louder exhaust.

Depends on what you like if it's too loud or not.

I'm replacing my Stillen muff this weekend w/OEM because for me, it's WAY too loud. But there are a lot of guys on the .org that like it that way.

I don't know about the 4" difference you mentioned. Have you actually hung the "junkyard" exhaust under your car yet? If you haven't, I'm thinking that maybe once you have it hung and centered that it will be ok. Just a thought

Otherwise, I would just get a muffler shop to make an extension (like you said) to make up the difference.

Also, I would think that if anything, the junkyard exhaust would be short on the back end. Not at the cat. This is because mufflers for the '95-'96 model years are a few inches shorter than the '97-'99.
