i think that K&N recommends that you rinse it in water, but without their oil afterwards, it will not last long

Don't do just that. Get the K&N Filter Cleaning kit... mine was $11. People have said you can get them for $9.

if its the same material, then yeah. if its foam or something else, then no.

to the original poster, i don't think water will harm the intake, but it won't do it any good either because it wont get the dirt out. just buy the cleaning kit, its like 10 bucks at any auto parts store.

Yes! buy the K&N filter cleaning kit.
I piad mine for $10, and when I try to rinse it off I could see the dirty stuff coming out of my intake.
It was damn nasty too...
Buy the cleaning kit to clean=> wash off=> condition it.

Well even with the K&N cleaning kit, which is basically a squirt bottle with some sort of detergent in it, you need to rinse the filter out with water anyways. But do get the kit.

Warm water is fine, but a little dishwasher soap is better. Don't waste your money on a K&N filter cleaning kit. The oil is neccessay, however the cleaner is just a glorified Palmolive detergent that costs 10X more.

ps. Make sure your filter is completely dry and lightly re-oiled before you put it back in.

I spoke to the guys at JWT about their POP charger. It now ships a K&N copy. They said I could use the K&N cleaner, or this stuff called simple green. You see it in the auto parts stores.

what kind of oil do you use after you clean it?
what is the purpose of the oil?
does the oil come with the cleaning kit?

thanks all of you for your input

How do you apply the oil? Spray it? Also how much of it do you use.

You spray it on. I wouldn't use too much...the idea is to just lubricate it enough to trap the dirt. Too much spary can get your throttle body pretty greasy along with other things too...

And don't spray the inside, sounds dumb but one of my friends thought you were supposed to...

This is an old post... but didn't wanna make a whole new thread about it. I called up Autozone and Pepboys (nearest auto store) and asked em about the k&n filter recharger and they both said they were outta stock.... till next week. I want to get this all done by this weekend cuz i'm gonna install my mipipe then. From the content of this thread, i figured that i can just use:

Water w/ dishwasher soap? do i just soak it in there?

also about lubricating it... what kinda oil do you guys think it is...

Actually, if you have a spray soap(house hold cleaner in a bottle), that would be best. Spray the entire filter and let it soak for afew minutes. The gently wash the soap off in the sink from the inside to the outside. This allow the dirt to dislodge rather than be driven into the filter.

They instruct to air dry as well and not use a hair dryer or an oven or it will shring the filter element.

As for oil, you got me. If you can buy the specific K&N oil by itself, that would be great.

It doesn't really matter....none of those will eat through your filter. If you want to play it safe, just dilute it with water and spray away.
