I just did my brake pads again; only this time I bought the piston-turning tool from Autozone. I wish I had it the last 5 times I changed my pads! It fits perfectly, and makes it so easy to turn in the pistons.

I highly recommend it over the needle nose pliers method.

I just use the disc brake loaner kit, but yeah, the right tools help.

 

Autozone has a disk brake kit that they lend out? What's in it?

I don't know about Autozone, but Kragen (aka Checker's, Parts America) has the kit. It's got the main t-bar tool and a couple of various plates. You only use two or three pieces out of it, but it's pretty handy.

 

Only took me about a minute to turn them in with a needle nose.

 

What does the tool look like, and what is it called? Or do I look for a package that says "Piston Turning Tool"?

 

It is a cube with 3/8" socket holes on each side of it. There are 2 nubs on each side too. The nubs go into the slots in the pistons for the rear brakes. You'll need a 3/8" extension, and (obviously) a 3/8" socket wrench.

Mine used to go in nice and smooth too, but lately they've been getting harder and harder to turn. They are a PITA to get in now (w/o the tool). I decided on getting the tool after some cuts/bruises trying the pliers method

I'm planing on either upgrading the pistons or just reconditioning the pistons I've got very soon.
