problem with brakes... can't get out of park

Twice today I have gotten into my car and had trouble shifting out of park. When I push the brakes, it feels like the power braking isn't working. It feels like the car isn't turned on. Also I noticed a slight hiss from the front driver's side wheel well when I push the brake. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? I thing I am going to see a mechanic tomorrow about it, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

How much brake fluid is in the resovoir? hiss? It could be that theres a leak in the brake system and that hiss could be fluid squirting out of it whenever you press on the pedal. check for any fluids comming out of any part of the system.

Hmm... When you say that it feels as if the car isn't turned on, do you mean you can pump up the brakes to a firm pedal that doesn't budge at all?

Does this hiss occur only when you are moving?

HISS

Your power brake boster is shot. This hiss your hearing is a vaccume leak. Does your idle speed increase slightly when you hear the hiss? If so it's definately your power brake boster.

This morning I went back out and checked on it again, and it seems to be working fine. I can't hear the hiss at all, but I still have my doubts. It was raining last night, and I was driving quite hard. Maybe it heated my pads up or something. I'm still going to go have them checked, and I am about to go check my brake fluid right now.

ok...the brakes are working fine now, and I can get out of park. The brake fluid is full. There is still a slight hiss though so I'll go have that checked out. Oh yeah... my idle speed stays the same when I push the brake. Thanks for the help.

The hiss still throws a red flag up that says your power booster has a vaccum leak. Just have it check out, we don't want to lose a member due to a brake failure.
