need help with wire harness
need help with wire harness
About two months ago I purchased an upgraded wire harness but had nothing but problems with it. High beam indicator was constantly on, high beams did not work, harnesses burned to a crisp etc. Turns out the company sent me a 9007 harness not a 9004. Anyway, I purchased and last night installed a new harness that is for the 9004. The high beam indicator is off, but my high beams are still not working. At first we thought that the high/low beam was switched some how but when I turn my highbeams on the output is dimmer than what the low beam should be. We checked all the wires, harnesses, relays etc. Anyone have an idea as to how the heck to fix this problem, besides getting HID's?

Is the 9004 harness 100% the same as the oem harness (i.e. wire gauge within harness is same/better than oem, connectors & wiring config.)? I'm just looking at things from a "fundamentals" perspective. Something sounds crossed up somewhere. I'd use a multimeter to check the wiring arrangement of the 9004 harness against a benchmark (the oem one). Verify that each wire is hooked up to the proper contact within the connector (on each end of the harness) to make sure nothing is crossed up. That's all I can suggest right now.
Good luck!
Good luck!
the most fun i've ever had with my max was when the harness sparked and burnt itself all the way to the fuse causing lots and lots of smoke on the highway.
no more harnesses for me - straight hid next.

is the relay making a clicking sound or no sound at all??? if its not making any sound buy a new relay and enjoy your high beams
i noticed alot of companies like Hella and APC supply $hitty relays with their wiring and they usually wont work right out of the package.

Yes the relay is clicking, I even switched them, nice try Mr. SmartyPants.

Clicking seems to indicate there might not be enough current to keep the "switch" closed. I'm not sure why it's opening/closing repeatedly (which results in clicking noise). Its an oem relay I gather? Have the bulbs been changed to a higher "wattage"? If so, maybe it can't handle the extra current running through it?

Hmmm.....clicking in a relay does NOT sound good. Inside the relay is a coil. When enough current runs through it, an electrical circuit is closed on the "secondary side". That secondary side usually carries higher current or voltage. A relay is essentially a switch. The coil needs to stay energized for the "switch" to remain closed.

It is an aftermarket relay, most after market relays click when activated for a split second.

I think there are two issues at hand:
1) realy's coil might not be sized right for current being pushed through the Max's switching system (it might need more current);
2) there are some configuration issues within the relay in the way the contacts are that's causing all the grief as i999Maximagirl described.
If you have the original relay, you should see how many contacts there are & figure out their electrical configuration. Two contacts will be on the "primary" side. When current runs through that, the switch (or switches) inside the relay close (or open...this is gping to get slightly complicated). My guess is that the oem relay has at least two pairs of switches inside. On the secondary side, the contacts are designated "NO" (normally open) or "NC" (normally closed). I'm going off electrical knowledge from many moons ago so I might be a bit rusty. In the oem relay, you'll have to figure out which contacts are NO and which are NC. There also may be single-pole single-throw (SPST) switches and/or may be doble-pole double-throw (DPDT).
A Nissan manual might provide this schematic detail within the relay. This would really be the ideal way to get to the bottom of this. The much harder way to figure things out is with a multimeter & that's no party.

Maybe someone else has better & more promising approach than me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
