Philips XenStart??
Philips XenStart??
Hi guys... I tried searching on the forum but couldn't find anything about XenStart. I saw on ebay a Philips HID kit that separated the Ballast and the Starter (Starter attached to base of bulb). The bulbs are now called D1S and D1R.
I never knew this existed before... is this a new design or an older one? ANd... because the base of the bulb is pretty big... will it be able to fit in maximas? The kit is called Philips Xenstart. Here's a link to a page that has pics of them.

Stick with the traditional D2R kit. On ebay, I've seen some Phillips Ultinon kits for 9004 housings for about 400, which is not bad at all. I think the xenstart is not designed well because when you put the light into a housing, the ignighter box might be in the way.
makes sense... thanks. i think i'll do that instead, though the xenstart on ebay is just 80 per pair of ballasts. that's what made me look into it

Does the kit say for 9004?...If it doesn't don't buy it cuz it wont fit. Check out the 6000k phillips kits, which is the ultinon kit. Make sure the cathode wire is covered by a blue insulator. Maybe its the anode wire, but im not sure, took chem last semester and not sure which way stuff moves when you put a current through it...
The kit on ebay is ony for the ballasts. It's 80 dollars. I'd have to buy the bulbs myself somewhere else. With those kits you'll need D1R bulbs and not D2R bulbs, but so far I've only been able to find D1S bulbs (same sellor also sells them for 80 bucks/pair). So, I haven't seen any 9004 bulb labels yet. But yeah, I think to be safe I should just look into the Ultinon kits.
what happens if one of the wires is not covered by a blue insulator?

no i meant that does it have to be specifically a blue wire for our 9004 set up?

That would short it and blow up your bulb and probably cause a fire. The wire is insulated so you don't short wires that are 20,000 volts. Its like sticking your finger in a 120v socket multiplied by 167.
