Which is better? G20 or Maxima?

Which would be a better car to mod? a 2000-2002 Infiniti G20 manual...

or a 4th Generation Maxima manual?

Which ones would get more power and speed?

Drive the G20 and then the 4th gen Maxima and you'll see the Maxima is the way to go. Absolutely no contest!

G20 is just a gussied up sentra. Cool cars, and tons of bolt on potential. Many more mods available than for the Max, but the max is still a faster car. Thats not to say the SR20DE is a slouch though, they can run mid 14s w/ bolt ons, at least in the sentras they can. Not sure how much the G20 weighs.

Yea, thats what I kinda thought, someone the other day said a G20 with a turbocharger would waste a Maxima, but I wasnt sure.... Im sure the Maxima would waste it because Maximas get about 7.4 secs 0-60 stock, and the G20s get about 10secs 0-60 I think stock

Im not saying I was thinking about getting a G20, im 100% set on getting a Maxima, they are just too sexy

The Maxima will dominate over the G20. The G20 is comparable to the Sentra (not Spec V) as far as power goes. It's got a 4 cylinder engine in it.

Take the ~$18k you'd spend on the G20, buy a 5spd 4th gen for ~$8000. You've got $10k to play with This is assuming you're not going for a conventional car loan. Either way, the Max will be less expensive, and that means more money for mods!

Ummm...how does that work? $18k for a G20 vs. $8k for a Maxima?

You can't compare buying a new car(2002 G20) with buying a used car (1997 Maxima). He would conceivably buy a 1999 G20 (~$13k) or a 1999 Maxima (~$13k), and mod from there, which would leave him at roughly the same $ amount.

Stylistically, I prefer the Maxima. And there is a good argument to be made for the V-6. But you can't just gloss over the difference of buying a new 2002 car instead of a 1997.

According to your logic of "less expensive, and that means more money for mods!," he could buy a "Maxima" for $4k (1992), leaving him even more money for mods! Wow, great logic.

He was comparing a used Maxima (4th gen) to a new(er) G20 (2000-2002).

That would be great logic if he was considering a 3rd gen Maxima. He clearly wants a 4th gen. Why?
1) He's posting in the 4th gen forum.
2) He specified 4th gen.
3) It's a hell of a car

The logic is based on whether you prefer performance over the feeling of owning a brand new car. This is something that he is contemplating, as he specifically asked "Which ones would get more power and speed?".

I simply gave my opinion. I would get a 4th gen Maxima rather than a new(er) G20. If I was resigned to paying $18k, I'd get the Maxima and spend some of the difference on mods.

Does this only make sense to me?

G20 is slower in the straights but it is an amazing handling car. If you could find the FWD SR20DET (which is possible) you'd have a great sleeper. The G20 does handle wayy better than the Maxima.

And its suspension is a little different from the Sentra as well.

Yea, I wasnt really even thinking about gettting a g20, someone the otehr day said a G20 would waste a Maxima with a turbo, but I laughed... came here to check to make sure... hehe.... I know maximas will dominate alot of cars like the g20, its jsut common sense.

G20 is the car to mod the living hell out of. That Sentra SE-R motor is something else...

G20 is just slow because of its weight..

G20s are entry level luxury small/midsize cars.. maximas are the regular, affordable midsize cars..

if you have lots of cash.. go and get that G20 and invest some $ into it.. you'll have a hell of a sleeper.. but it makes no sense to me to buy a 2002 car and tear it apart to make something fun out of it..

If you're looking to do that,
get an older G20.. 1/2 the price.. same modding potential.

The Maxima can only do so much because of a lack of aftermarket..

I have owned both with manuals. Comparing stock cars:
Power and speed - Maxima hands down.
Handling and fun to drive - G20 all the way.

Modding - depends on how much you want to spend, but there are more go-fast and suspension (and asthetic) parts available for the Maxima. Getting a G20 into the 10.XX quarter mile might be possible since it uses the same SR20DE engine as the Sentra SE-R that's into the NINES: http://members.aol.com/ghettomax1/ But it's not a daily driver

ARGH!!!!!!!!!

You want handling, you get a G20, but the leather and "fancy" crap is like...hi...stupid weight. They look nicer than Sentras, but you're better off getting the 200SX SER from the same time period. More bolt-ons because the engine has much lower compression, therefore can be boosted easier, plus the mods are almost always made for the compacts anyway (read: hondas).

You want handling, get a maxima, add suspension and SFC's, good tires. You also get handling there, but the car IS bigger.

make only sense to you?? pretty much.... 0 miles on a car needs no money to go for a while. buy a 97 maxima and regardless you are going to put money into it just to keep it going. they ARE reliable, but you dont have brand new brakes, tires, even wipers, fluids, and most importantly, not a new car. you DO get wear and tear, and scratches, dents and rips. nothing is like a new car.

Did someone say G20 with SR20DET Swap?

More Here:

Did someone SC'd Maxima

Both cars are fun, I personally love the Max... the room and torque... Much more fun, my friend loves his G20... different strokes...different folks.

Most auto G20s have leather and fancy crap. My stick G20 was a cloth interior sport sedan. I just don't understand 'luxury' in an automobile. Why would I want leather to burn my @ss in the summer and slide across the cabin in a hard corner? And why do some people think plastic wood grain is the shyt when it's so ugly?

OK, to each his own. Nevermind me.

I understand this. I was simply answering his question: A 4th gen Maxima or a 2000-2002 G20?

As for it costing money to keep it going, there's no argument from me. There is an argument, though, that it costs more per mile to drive a new car. Depreciation is killer on a 0 mile car.

Weighing the cost/benefit ratios, I would say the 4th gen Maxima is an all-around winner in my book.

I have also owned both cars..thouh did have a 93 G20.. if you arnt concerned with looks.the 1st gen g20 is way better...the sr20de has massive potential..they have bolt on det conversion now for about 3g's..and its hella fun to weve thru traffic in that car... but i just got a 4th gen maxima and i love it.. id take the maxima even if g20 is slightly more fun to drive...

Thanks for all your input.

Personally I like the 4th gen Maxima cause I dont want a "compact" car, I like the roomy Maxima, plus it has alot of power, its a win win situation.

Compared to the Civic or Integra... more room, more power, what else you need?

Im jsut too impatient to wait until next summer to get my Max.
