I don't know if this helps but when I received my Budget Stainless Mandrel pipe it came painted black. There is no trace of any paint left on my pipe. I assume they use some sort of heat-resistant paint on the pipe to begin with.

If you really want to know, when I get home from rush hour traffic, I can temp the Y using my temp gun and give you a pretty accurate reading. But I'm sure 1500 degrees is way up there, I don't think your Y-pipe will get that hot.

I was actually planning on doing this too whenever my warpspeed order gets here.

Got 4 cans of black Plasti-kote Hi Temp 1500* paint just siting here waiting. Gonna do the whole thing from Y to muffler.

Should be fun. Whenever those parts get here..

BTW, I've read some posts where people have done it and it's stayed on very nicely.

Guess the Budget Ys come with cheap paint. Well, can't expect too much for $160.

Ok, since I've been temping practically everything on my car today.....

Here's what I got...
I temped the Y-pipe in various locations, it ranges from 190 to 247 degrees. Just an FYI, I stuck the temp gun inside the tailpipe and it temped highest at 294 degrees. The outside temperature was 63 and I was driving for 10 minutes in rush hour traffic averaging about 35mph.

I think when you use 1500 max degree paint, you have nothing to worry about. I would recommend you sand the pipe down using a finishing sponge so your first coat of paint would stick on there better.

Yeah, believe it or not.... But keep in mind it's only 10 minute of in-town driving, not several hours of highway driving.

Check this page out about engine temp...
http://litespeed-racing.com/engine-temp/
This is after 20 minutes of twichy road, lot of shifting between 2nd and 3rd.

I did this for another thread today

I'm sure if you drove on the highway in 95 degree weather for a few hours it would get much hotter.

BUDGET pipes come pre-painted because the entire pipe isn't SS, some parts of it are. Just what I heard...
