Help, Stripped Bolt!!

i'm not keeping this dam car and i'm trying to take mods off. The only thing that i'm having problems with is the easiest thing to install!!!

The dam FSTB has a stripped bolt. Only one bolt holding this sum of a beech down and i stripped it by mistake! I used a ratchet now and its mad loose. What's the best way to get this crapola out?! help, i'm not letting my FSTB go with the car!!!!

Are you using regular tools? If you are, try getting an impact wrench and try removing it that way. I had done the samething you have with the FSTB and I took it to my local garage and they spend 10 seconds on it. If you are lucky, since it may be totally stripped, they can hammer on a smaller nut for the impact wrench and can get it off much easier.

If you're selling the car...let it go...what's $20?

$20 isn't worth all that frustration to me.

You can find them for like 45-60 dollars normally. But if you have a stillen it is still going to cost you a pretty penny to buy it from them.

try getting an impact wrench
Anyone got an electric impact wrench? Im thinking of getting one, some sell for like 100 on ebay. Can 250 ft/lbs of torque take off almost any bolt?

First off let's get the termology right. There are several things that could be the cause of your problems and each one of them involves a different technique in correcting it.

Unless your strut tower is completely different than mine, you do not have bolts, you have studs mounted on the strut bearing bracket and you have nuts attaching it to the tower.

You said you stripped the bolt. This implies that you or someone else tightened the nut so much that you "stripped" the threads out of the inside of the nut. Is this what happened?

Or did you strip the threads off of the stud?

Or did you round off the nut with the wrench?

Or did you break the stud loose from bearing bracket?

You need to identify exactly wich problem you have before we can give you some procedures on repairing it.

I have the same problem as you, except that I'm trying to remove the bolt (or stud) so I can install my FSTB. The stud keeps on turning but it doesn't become loose, I'm guessing it is stripped. I have never taken the stud out before, so I dunno how it got stripped.

So I have a FSTB sitting in my trunk doing nothing.

btw, I used normal tools (no air tools or powered tools). I also tried using a breaker bar to remove the bolt.

I have a DeWalt electric impact wrench, it has 270 ft lbs of torque. The key to the effectiveness of the tool is the 2400 impacts per minute. I haven't had a bolt yet it couldn't take off. I found great deals on impact sockets, extensions and knuckles on eBay. Makes taking tires off a piece of cake, however I hand torque when putting tire back on.

i'm talking about stud or bolt holding down the FSTB so it doesn't go anywhere. The outside of the last bolt i need to take out is stripped. I just can't get a good grip. I don't have a stillen FSTB. I got mine from max_se@hotmail.com way back for 60 dollars. ITs a basic FSTB polished which does the job. If they are 24 dollars now i won't feel too bad losing this but waiting for it is gonna suck especially since this one dam bolt is stopping me from keeping a mod and saving money....the outside is stripped, not the inside

if the outside of the bolt is not too stripped, try using a 6 point socket (if you havent already). its got the hexagonal shape, and gets much better grip on the bolt than a 12 point socket, which tends to round the bolts if you put too much pressure on it.

Spiff56747 is right. If the nut is rounded off, the first thing to try is a 6-point socket. You may have to tap it on with a hammer if it is rounded off badly.

If that doesn't work a pair of vice grips may work since the torque on these nuts are pretty low. Make sure that the vice grips are hella tight. Wiggle the vice grips back and forth slightly as you squeeze the handles closed. You should keep tightening the adjustment screw on the pliers until you can just barely get them to close. If they start to slip on the nut, tighten the pliers some more.

If that doesn't work, get a nut splitter. Basicly you are cutting the nut in half. Don't use a hack saw or you will ruin the stud.

Obviously, no matter how you get it off, you need to replace it with a new nut.
