CV Boot or whole CV Joint?

Hey, guys, I have two maxes right now and selling the other one, the one I'm selling seems to have noises coming from the front tire every time the wheel is turned, and it is actually gotten quite bad now (don't drive the car anymore), do I have to just replace the boot of the whole joint? I also read that you have to replace 2 of them, can I just do one? Thanks.

Re: CV Boot or whole CV Joint?

c'mon guys, I need to know if I can go to pep boys and just buy the cv joint and replace? Would that fix my problems or does the axle also have to be replaced? When I buy the cv joint at pep boys, does it include the axle?

Your going to have to replace the whole CV...the boot is what you replace when you tear a boot...or you start hearing a noise to prevent anymore damage..and hopefully prolong the life of the CV before it fails...but if your getting a sound that bad...CV is most likely gone...does it pull the car at all when driving. But replacement CV is in your future or needs to be done

If it's real bad, I would replace the whole CV joint on the side thats making the noise and then replace the boot on the other side.

Good luck.

Your welcome And by the way you can do one at a time. Just make sure you know which one is causing the sound. My friend made the mistake of assuming it was the driver side when it really was the passenger side CV...cost him an extra 140...But like JP said you can do one or the other...no problem..and I would check the other one to make sure you don't have any rips in the boot. If you do slap another boot on and you just did a little preventative maintenance.

Check out. . .

www.raxles.com

If you're selling your car soon, get the cheaper, local CV-joint assembly from a Pep Boys or another competitor.

If you're keeping the car however, you may want to spend a little extra on the raxle manufactured unit. For more info. on why, visit their site.

Many people here have purchased cheaper auto-parts-store CV-joints and had them fail prematurely. They are not built as well as the raxle units, and tend to be built with inferior materials, apparently.

Good luck!
