His reply to me was 'Stillen lists it for $3900, I'm saving you $200.' Gee thanks.

You're right, I asked Adam at Stillen for his best deal and it was about $3500.

When I was doing my homework, one night I just sent out the same generic e-mail to any and every performance shop on the net, wether or not they even listed stuff for the Max. "Hi I have a '96 .... I am looking to buy.... I am shopping around so your best price is much appreciated. I look forward to doing business...". And day after day the e-mails would trickle in. And they seemed to keep getting lower . By the time I was done, the absolute best was $3200. I sent it to Paul (Avalon) and we ended up at $3250. I just figured for $50 I would rather stay with a company we are all familiar with.

But yeah, his first reply to my 'generic' e-mail was $3700. Shame on him.

Sprintmax,
I hear that the 1 step platinums are better, they last longer than the copper plugs, and the Xterra and 300Z use them in their engines.

Ptatohead, EXCELLENT write up on the supercharger. I may end up doing it myself. Thank you for the support!

Also,

The step1 colder plugs are NGK's, so that's why I want to go w/ them. The stock plugs, to my understanding, run too hot....

95 - 99 = $3450
99 - 2k1 = $3900

only half right..

the only advantage Platinum has over Copper is that they last 60 k while copper last 30k

check with most of the high hp guys here.. 1MAX2NV, myself, MardigrasMax, not sure about delio, sx7r.. and a couple more are running Copper.. BKR6E .. even if you do a search for BKR6E alone you will find some shocking information..

Copper plugs provide a better spark than Platinum Plugs.. IE. Better performance.. I only run Copper.. mainly because i don't mind chaning plugs and they are $8 for 6 instead of $8 each..

Nissan Part# for NGK Copper are 22401 - 50Y06

I ran for a year on stock plugs and they were fine, however I did notice some knocking whenever I pushed the SC hard which was not much.

Even if it is not the worse thing he could do by leaving them in he might as well changethem out while the install is happening and know that it is complete.

I think, even though I don't have 60k, I am going to get the 60k tuneup done at the same time, and get new coil packs (under warranty) before I get the S/C installed and loose that extended sh%@. That way I gots new belts, coils, antifreeze, and everything is set/tuned back to stock settings. Everything will be checked and greased ... even the brakes! (j/k)

But SuDZ is correct, while everything is apart, I might as well go w/ the colder plugs, and just do it right from the begining. As long as I do things right, I hope to decrease my chances of problems...................... i hope

To really decrese problems the most important thing is do not rush it. Plan on needing plenty of time before you even touch the first but or bolt. If you dont give yourself enough time to install it then you will start rushing atthe end and that can lead to mistakes and you know where that can go. After each install of a section stop and double check it. It might seem like a waste of time if everything was all set but finding one skipped hose in time will be well worth it.

Well said sudz. That is the number one thing. Patience. Above experience, above mechanical aptitude, above having a shop with all the latest tools, above anything else. Patience. Take it slow. There is no rush. There are no metals for breaking any speed records. Don't give yourself a time frame. Start when you know you can afford to leave your car immoble for a while if need be. Figure a few weeks if you are busy and can only work on it a few hours at a time. Don't say "I need my car Monday so I have to get done this weekend". Set no time frames. Just take it slow and double check stuff. And you'd be surprised how quickly it moves along even while 'moving slow'.

Good Idea Ptatohead, That advice is always good.

This will be my 1st major install. A stillen Intake was my only other one (besides changing my own oil). I hope I don't mess anything up.

The first time I ever changed my own oil was during the SC install. So you have one up on me.

Yeah that had been started a while back. Not a bad idea I mean if it will save you some time or headaches down the road why not spend a few extra bucks now and pick one up.

Sorry to disappoint you, but if you read the entire thread you'll see that the Kevlar belts aren't going to happen, at least not any time soon. The thread isn't dying because people read only the first post and immediately post a "put me down for two" reply.

That is dissappointing. Also, what pulley is the plastic one that melts all the time?

I hear that Stillen has replaced it with a pollyurethane one

Alright I have read the entire thread I wanted to know a couple of things.. I plan on buying the CustomMaxima turbo kit BUT for Auto... 1) Should I still buy the UDP Pulley and how many pulleys do I need...? 2)I was quoted a price by a performance shop here in NYC for a custom made turbo kit for my Max that will push at least 400 whp... I think that M5 power if I am not wrong... But the price will be 6000-7000 grand for everything labor intercooler the whole 9 yards, is it worth it...? over Customs Kit...?

1. Since you are not driving the blower with a belt, you can take advantage of a UDP.

2. 6000 grand? Wow, that's a lot of money. Even 6 grand is not as good a price as what is presently available through pfi or Harold's people, and we know their kits work. Depends on what is included in the 6 grand price, though, and does that include warranty, dyno tuning time, etc. Having local support for your setup may be worth it to you in the long run.

I was under the impression that you keep the stock pulleys when S/C or T/C.... I would call Custom and ask them. They know their stuff.

The reason you want to stay with the stock crank pulley with a SC is because the SC is driven from the crank pulley via the drive belt. The blower speed relative to the crank speed is going to be proportional to the ratio of the drive pulley to the driven pulley. So if you reduce the size of the drive pulley by installing a UDP, then you are going to reduce blower speed and produce less boost at a given engine speed. Unless, of course, you compensate by going with a smaller blower pulley at the same time.

Turbochargers, on the other hand, don't care what size the crank pulley is, being driven by the velocity of the exhaust, so installing a UDP may prove beneficial if it really does provide faster acceleration into the boost-producing rpm range.
