Brakes Problem...

Today the wreckless driver infront of me didnt indicate and his brake lights were not working, so I couldnt tell he was making a turn. So i had to slam on my brakes and the ABS kicked in. Now I think that my rear left brake pad is rubbing because the wheel is getting really hot and now a nasty smell is coming from that area. If this has happened to anyone else and they have a solution on how to fix it without going to a mechanic, please post it here. Thnx

P.S. I have a 1995 GXE Maxima (with hubcaps still )

yeah, unfortunatly it sounds exactly like a frozen caliper, basically the way a caliper is suppose to work is when you apply the brakes it squizes the caliper (and brakes) and when you let go of the brake it releases the caliper and opens them up a bit so they don't touch the rotors, and it seems that you caliper is not doing the letting go part, I really WOULDN'T WAIT ON THIS, and have it fixed immediately, before that causes anymore problems. the good news is that you can do it yourself, the bad news is that calipers are expensive, but it's brakes, and it's not something I would risk not fixing personally.

consider this advice and go to a mechanic to make sure that that's the problem, it's hard to diagnoze things w/out looking at the car, but that's most likely what might be the problem

check to see if the 2 guide pins are sliding freely. if not then try to re-lube them.

this is easy to do in the front, in the rear it's supposebly a royal pain in the behind, if you look at the manual the rear has like 20 some what parts that need to be taken apart vs. like 4 parts in the front, but of course, it might be duable

if its a siezed caliper, try to purchase a remanufactured caliper AND a new rotor which was probably warped due to the heat.

good luck
