A Super-Turbo Setup?!? Is it possible...

In the past i have posted threads and read other peoples ideas. I asked if it was possible and people said "no", "if u have the $$" and others said "it would be useless". but i was thinking it about it and it's practically straight forward. well, since the supercharger gets powered from the belts and the turbo gets powered from the exaust... why not have the supercharger power the turbo? that would save alot of space and piping. Have the supercharger setup like normal except have the piping go down through a intercooler and then back up into the turbo and straight into the engine? it seems practicle doesnt it.

It's possible, I know at least one person has done it. Look for last years SCC's ultimate street machine edition. The one guy had a twin charged MR2.

Wow, I wonder how long the engine would like this setup before boom.

This doesn't make sense to me. A turbocharger uses the exhaust to spin a turbine which spins an air pump which forces air into the engine. A supercharger uses the drive belt to spin an air pump which forces air into the engine.

You want to use the supercharger's forced air to spin the turbocharger to force air into the engine? It doesn't make any sense. This will be considerably less efficient than just using a supercharger.

No, no... He's referring to twincharging. Twin charging involves using a supercharger at low rpm to get the engine into boost on the turbo. As the engine gets into the high end and the supercharger begins to lose effectiveness, the turbo takes over making more power. This has been done with the MK1 MR2. HKS made a kit that allowed owners to add a turbo to their supercharged MR2s.
Twincharging is somewhat similar to people with big turbos who use nitrous to get into boost quickly and minimize lag.

Drool, maybe I should go this route instead of twin turboing my Maxima...but I don't think I want a blower nor spend the money on one...

Sounds expensive but cool. How much more HP do you see or is it just the same HP except all the way through the band?

dude, why are you asking stupid questions like these, there are no maximas that have done that, maxima owners on this board are cheap and will not try out things like that unless it's already been done, to answer your question though, yes, "if u have the $$" you can do it, why can't you be happy w/ that kind of answer, because this is the truth, a supercharger is around 4k and a turbo setup is also around 4k so for a grand total of 8k (AT LEAST) you can have both and then spend 2k for someone to tune the stupid thing, then, the setup is too powerful and you need to upgrade the internals, and by the time you're done you'll spend around 20k to get it done on a car that's worth $hit because 1) it's FWD, so you can't put any power down no matter what you do 2) it's heavy as hell, so for the car to handle anything, you need to get coilovers, so that's another 2k into the ratbox, 3) it's huge(long), moment of inertia is at huge disadvantage when you take corners, so even if you have something that handles ok on 2k coilovers, it still $ucks *** compared to a RWD car, so if you want to spend that much money on a family sedan, then go ahead, if you want a race car, then buy a race car

K

p.s. hope this helps

His question was pretty vague but I don't think he was asking about the twincharging concept... I think he was asking about having a supercharger's forced air go through the turbine side of a turbo rather than the exhaust gasses. I think. Either way, its possible but not practical, and would be ALOT more trouble than it would be worth in terms of power output.

BTW the SCs for maximas are not the high end wheezing roots blowers that come stock on most cars, they are centrifugal blowers which are in reality the compressor side of a Garrett turbo that is driven off of the crank (through a gearbox), so it doesn't suffer up top like you might be thinking. They have to spool up much like a turbo does and boost comes on progressively just like a turbo does.
