Tach is stuck
Well, i woke this morning, drive off to work, I look down about half way there and my tach is dancing around 1000rpm. Up to 1500 rpm, it works fine, but above 1500rpm, it drops to 1000 and just jumps around there until the engine drops below 1500rpm. Anyone ever have this happen? Any suggestions?

well, after messing around some more, it works fine below 2k rpm, but as soon as it hits 2k, it just starts pinging like i am hitting the rev limiter, but i am able to increase engine speed still. if i rev way up, then the needle may drop a bit. it almost seems mechanical and not electrical... y would it work only up to a certain rpm if the electrical was bad?

Me too...
If you figure this out let me know cause this has been haunting me for the last three months. I went to a NISSAN dealership and they suggested replacing the whole cluster. Way too expensive for me.

This exact thing you describe has been haunting me for the last three months. I have NO idea what caused this or how I go about fixing this. If you figure a way to fix this problem let me know. And trust me...its gonna' get worse than it already is. It sucks and needs to be fixed. Sorry for telling you of the future of this menace.

It's possible that your guage face has come unglued from behind causing the base of the needle to bind on the raised surface. Alot of people that have installed aftermarket guage faces have this problem. I realize you probably don't have them but from my expierence with needles sticking there is almost no clearance between the guage face and the base of the needle. Even if your guage face raised 0.10" it would cause it to bind.
I had to completely remove my speedometer face to install the aftermarket one. Upon removal I was surprised with how little adhesive and surface area the gauge face has to mount to. Take a peek and see if it looks like the guage face is close to the base of the needle. If you can't tell, removing the dash cluster is not that hard. I believe there are instructions over at maximadriver.com.
If you find that the guage face and the base of the needle are touching you can use thin double sided tape or glue to reattach the guage face.

I had this exact same problem, and the only resolution I could come to was to replace the whole cluster. Luckily, I was able to find someone on the org who had an extra cluster they were willing to sell me for $50!
Sorry, I know the OEM cluster is like $400...
