My car rolled across the street!

On a steep slope I will put the handbrake on and then let go of the brake to see if the car will move, then apply more handbrake until the car is stopped, THEN put it in 1st.
I don't kerb the wheels or anything.

I've never put my car in gear when I park it, even now I probably never will, It was a freak accident, and like sprint said I am probably going to get a remote starter so I don't want to get into the habit.

Of course you leave a manual IN GEAR. You could have killed someone!

But now I have to replace the driver side front fender, the rear bumper, and the front bumper, not to mention the dents that will have to be taken out of the bodywork that can't be replaced.

what was your first reaction when you got outside
shouldn't you turn your tires in a direction so that it leans into the curb if it starts rolling?

Just a damaged door which my insurance paid for.

that is good, I would have died laughing if the owners had to call the police not knowing your car rolled into it...the call would be something like this:
"911 - Emergency..."
"Yes, I live at 123 Main Street and I want to report a hit and run..."
"Can you tell me if there are any injuries?"
"Yes, my porch and front door..."
".....uuhhhh.....please hold"

It's only as stupid as automatic people putting their car in park and not putting on the parking brake, all that is holding the car is a pin about the size of a pencil which will break. And spell "stupid" right stupid. And you could kill some one every time you get in a car but I'm not complaining.

Real simple folks...
When parking on any kind of an incline:
Parking Brake + 1st or reverse in a 5spd.
Parking brake(and let it settle against brake) then "Park" position in automatics.
It's the LAW in most states including CA.

True. But the idea is NOT to kill someone with your car. "I'm not gonna put it in gear cause someday I might get a remote starter..."????????

Well I didn't kill anyone with my car and I didn't park on an incline and I don't live in CA. The chance that my parked car not in gear is going to kill someone is lower than the chance that someone driving a car is going to kill someone, so untill they outlaw driving, I'm not going to put my car in gear.

Your car rolled OFF OF YOUR PROPERTY and into someone elses HOUSE.
