man...i feel so bad lol, and just realized i can't drive for sh*t.

i'm on rout 1 and 9 coming home from rutgers party going north and i hit the parkway. I'm chillin, doing a good 75-80 and i see the 2001-2002 honda coupe looking car slowly passing me on my left. Sounding real nice and probably my first real race with this car. it was at 3 at night, nice clean streets and the only thing i was worrying about was cops. But not tonight!!!

So i have it in 5th around 80 and i keep tapping gas so i keep speeding up and slowing down...then after a good 15 seconds of doing this, i hear a serious growl coming from his car, like some super exhaust or something . He guns it and i gun it right behind him. He is slowly flying away from me and i'm like . Felt so bad man, and i just saw a thread where some guy raced a 350z and he threw it in 3rd at freaking 80 mph and i'm wondering if the outcome would have been different if i atleast threw it in 4th instead of sticking with it in 5th gear. I just get scared when throwing it in lower gears because i can never get it to set perfectly. Car just jumps hard as hell and then gives me the nice speed i want but i guess i have a lot to learn about racing and 5 speed...

P.S. - down the parkway i bumped into a prelude (the newer style one i think) and made him look like a corolla. Boosted up my self-esteem but i always felt like i could take any honda no matter what year except for the s2000 and the newest accord....

You didn't downshift? WTH? Why get a 5spd then? I lost count on how many times I wish I could downshift, but then I remember I got a freaking automatic! You have a 5spd, downshift man!

turn off OD...thats almost like downshifting

and if he got a jump on you, then that could explain why you couldnt catch em.....or you just suck at driving

I am taking a guess, but it seems like you are not rev-matching. Your car will not jump.
Rev Match= In 5th gear, clutch in, tap gas to match revs and downshift to 4th simultaneously, clutch out. If you do a search, it is pretty well covered.
As far as setting it perfectly, it just takes practice, and a good understanding of your RPM/MPH ratio. Gotta love the 5 speed.

if u were going 80mph u should of thrown it in 3rd gear and rev matched and 4th gear to 130mph thats what i do and it works

park the car turn it off and practice how to go from 5th to 4th to 3rd very quickly. If you dont learn how to downshift just sell the car and get a Auto. But as some dolt posted on some other forum downshifting is cheating . But the the accord is auto so it downshifted for him.

If you going 80 I wouldn't put teh car into 3rd, I would put it to 4th and rev till around 4.25k.

soudns to me like you just don't shift quick enough. just push the clutch in a and downshift lightning fast. lol

Yes I agree, if I were doing 80 on a hi-way, I wouldv'e definatly thrown it in 3rd. Gone to redline (which wouldn't be much further), then slam it into 4th. Redline, then be somewhere around 3.5-4000 RPM's.... RESLUT: Shi**ing on the civic!

def. would have downshifted to 4th, i don't know about 3rd, most of the max's power is well before redline anyway, at least that's what i've noticed, 4th gear at 4k rpm would've smoked that honda...i used to drive a civic, and i know it would never keep up with my max...

3rd gear redline is at 90 to lik 03 mph.i tested it the other day in my 95se.. but on the 4th gen max the power curve drops kinda steep after like 5.5 or 6k rpm.. wouldnt it be faster in 5 gear goign 80-85 to drop into 4th cuz you'll be in an increaseing HP range.. just a question.i dont know for sure.i've tried both on the road but cant really tell for sure... was too caught up in killing the civics.

off the wall question..excpet for premier 740mp HU.my 95 se 5spd is pretty much stock.. im thinking of buying a budget y pipe..but i still want my car to run quiet.. i know the y pipe wil make it sound louder for sure..but anyone know how much louder..will it get annoying..?

We all assume it was 4cyl..it could have been a 6cyl witch are pretty dam* fast up top if you ask me with that variably timing cr*p...

first of all guys, this was the HONDA ACCORD COUPE!!! not a civic. If i got beat by a civic, i would crash my car and prostitute on 42nd street....

Secondly, it was my fault to not downshift. I was going pretty fast in 5th and felt i could take him just on 5th gear. In fact, in the middle of the race, i could see the speed of him leaving me slowly decrease and myself slowly catching up, but i was well between 100 and 110 and although there was a high possibility of me catching him, i would have probably been in the 130 mark by the time i was ahead of him which would have taken another 10 seconds possibly, which is too long not only for us but increases our chance of getting caught speeding.

It's ok, I went out today and slaughtered a handfull of them..as well as a celica, a zx3, and a 2k1 camaro. I don't even know why i raced half of those cars... just a waste of gasoline. They know we're fast again.
