checking the timeing

How do I do this? The guy at the smog shop threw his inductor over the wires that plug into the coil (97 SE)does that work I thought it only worked on high voltage? I just have an old school timing light that has to have direct contace with the plug or wire.

Why do you want to check it?

You can't adjust it.

I figured as much, but just to make sure it was within specs. That was part of the reason it failed smog because the tech could not get a reading, he said that there was no spark at the #1 cyl, I checked and there is, so either he didn't know what he was doing or there was a loose conector or something???

When I got my smog checked here in WA, they just through a rubber block on my hood that measured RPM... I don't see why he would have had trouble with your car, it shouldn't matter to him what your timing is anyway...

If there is no spark there it could be a coilpack. Check your ECU for errors

When you are looking under the hood, look at the big wire harness wrapped in tape that runs across the top of the injectors. On the front corner of the harness, on the passenger side, there is a little loop of wire sticking out of the harness. This is where you get an RPM signal with an inductive pickup. That's what it's for.
