Timing Chain / Pulley Replacement?

When I start my car in the morning, I hear what I think is the timing chain "ratteling" for about 3-4 seconds and then it goes away. I assume this is because of the guides or tensioners. I was wondering if this job really should be done or can i push it off until it gets worse? I have a 95 GLE with 162k

I WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE THAT CHECKED. THAT DOESNT SOUND TO GOOD.

mine tend to make a little noise too, but it is minor and only does it at certain rpms and more so when cold...i talked to my mechanic, and he told me it was a 2600 dollar job and then he would not be able to guarantee it. He said that it is an inherant issue with our engines. He could be wrong, but it is an expensive and time consuming job. He informed me that it could be masked to some extent by thickening the oil, but he told me that i would be better off money wise to buy an engine if my tensioners completely failed. Just my .02...

Go find yourself another mechanic, your's is ripping you off. It is a big job, but 2600 is highway robbery!!!

The tensioner needs to be changed, the part isn't expensive, but it's a fair amount of labor.

Somethings the car had to make a noise, is the oil sensor that is inside of the engine and the oil is coming up. its normal in a cool weather.

Its probably not your timing chain. Its most likely the valvetrain rattling as the oil pressure pumps up. My car does the same thing. Its most noticeable after the car has been sitting for a couple days and the oil has all went back into the pan. I thicker oil may help this, or you can get one of those pre-oilers that pump up the pressure before you turn the engine over. Overall, its not really a big problem. These engines just seem to last forever.....

Re: Re: Timing Chain / Pulley Replacement?

I AGREE THAT $2,600 IS A CRAZY FIGURE TO DO THE JOB. IT IS LABOR INTENSIVE, BUT PARTS ARE CHEAP. WILL SWITCHING TO SYNTHETIC OIL HELP ANY?? I AM NOT SURE IF THIS REPAIR REALLY NEEDS TO BE DONE, OR iF i CAN JUST DRIVE WITH THE NOISE -- IT IS ONLY AT STARTUP AND CERTAIN RPM

Daniel.. from what I heard, the timing chains NEVER go bad. You may have a rare case with this though. I still find it hard to believe that the chain or tensioner went bad already. If it only does this when the engine is cold and has been sitting, dont worry about it. Its just the lack of oil pressure up in the heads that is making the noise. Again, its not really a problem.. just annoying.

AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE VALVES SINCE IT WAS ONLY A FEW SECONDS AT STARTUP AND WHEN THE CAR IS COLD. YESTERDAY, I HEARD THE NOISE/RATTLE AT ABOUT 1400 RPM WHEN DRIVING AWAY FROM THE HOUSE. IT IS NOT A REAL LOUD NOISE AND IT DOES SOUND LIKE THE CHAIN IS SLAPPING, BUT I AM NOT SURE. I AM CURIOUS TO KNOW IF THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM, OR IF I CAN DRIVE THE CAR THE WAY IT IS -- WILL THE NOISE GET WORSE AND WHAT CAN HAPPEN?

WHY DO YOU TYPE IN CAPS?

First you need to make sure you know where the sound is coming from. A mechanics stethescope, or even a toilet paper tube will work, just put it up close (disclaimer: If you where really loose/baggy clothing to do this and it gets caught in a fan/pulley its not my fault, use discresion and be careful) to the chain cover, and also over the valves. Changing to synthetic will NOT help IMO, but if you are using a 5w30, you might want to switch to a 10w30 or even 10w40 with your milage, depending on the weather where you live. As far as the chain goes, they rarely need to be replaced, but when they do, the labor is horrible. Expect to pay $1000 or so at most places unless you know someone. The valves are supposed to be self adjusting, but you may need to have them looked at if that turns out to be your problem noise.

if it turns out to be the timing chain which is making the noise, do I need to fix this asap - or will it get worse b/4 it needs to be fixed?

What "inherant problem" does this mechanic want to fix for $2600??
