Well I got a letter from nisan regarding a faulty diode in the alternator may cause fire. I took my 98 maxima to the dealer and they replaced the alternator. Just want to share this info with you guys.

Nisan will reimburse the cost if u replaced the alternator by yourself prior to the recall, If u want i can post the contact phone number for nissan . Thanks

 

They replaced mine too. Just as a note for the rest of you, (this happened to me) if you changed your alternator yourself a little before the recall, you can sometimes get your money back thru nissan. My case was my alternator went bad, I had it rebuilt, and put it in myself. Then I found out about the recall. I called Nissan and they told me they would refund me the money and my time (when the check came in it did not have the labor, just the alternator). Nissan told me to take it by their dealer and have them check out my rebuilt alternator to make sure it was okay. They replaced it also for free.

 

because my car was built in JAN 97, and the recall
begins with (I think) cars built in FEB 97...At this
point, I think I'm gonna need a new one anyway, but
a new FREE one would be better.

Call Nissan. There are certain vehicles and they can tell by your VIN.
yours is probably on there though.

 

My car is at Nissan as we speak, gettin alternator replaced(recall) and a bunch of other things have to get tweaked.

 

How much was the check for?

 

I only got it rebuilt for $115, so that was all that they gave me. They said that they were going to give me money for changing it myself, but I never saw it. Still, I got a new alternator from nissan and a check from my other one, so I was happy.

 

I love recalls. Getting new parts for free is great. On my last car I went in for a recall when they realized the previous ownder did not go in for any of them. I ended up getting like 8 things done that day for free.

You wouldn't happen to have a list of the recalled parts would you ???.. I just bought a 97 max.... so i'm gonna have to check it out...

 

I'm not sure if I did this right, but I went to the NHTSA site and did a search. The only recall it shows is for the alternator.

heh mine did exactly what the recall said it would do..

i ran the heated seat and the rear defrost all through the winter and it started on fire

almost a whole new front end

 

 

why's free parts from recalls good? to me, it means nissan skipped a few steps to cut costs. if the alternator could potentially go bad, what else did nissan overlook? i hope nothing critical. recalls are not good.

wait a second.... is the recall for both 97&98's? i thought it was just for the 97's. does anyone know for sure? if it is for the 98's too, then i gotta get my butt in gear and to nissan!

yea i didn't want to search because i was almost positave that it was only the 97's that were effected. i have actually never heard anything about the 98's being effected. sorry. normally i do search.
