Ok well I have always been into DSMs I have had 2 GSXs, however I decided I needed a daily driver while I turned my eclipse into the beast it needs to be. So with $2000 I went car hunting and I came upon a black 1995 nissan maxima 5spd which isnt what I had in mind but after the test drive I figured it would work. Well my speedy nature has gotten to me and I am already wanting to make this thing a little meaner. I am buying headers next week and I am going to have my buddy work a new exhaust system for me. I was thinking 2.5" pipe straight back, no cats just headers-pipe-muffler (glasspack). A friend of mine who runs a 300zx wants me to go with 3inch all the way back. I figure that 3 inches will kill my low end and only give me a slight gain in top end, so its not worth it for the way I drive. He argues that it won't and he does drive a smillar car. So I was wondering what you guys run???
r u talking about the eclipse or the Max?? I didn't know there was headers for the max. Also glasspack?? isn't that just to make noise?

Yeah I am buying headers for the max, and the glasspack will actually be quieter (well it should be anyway), its not a true glasspack though it is kinda basterdizied with a more or less straight flow through.
A racing company that makes headers for a variety of cars, most of em would be considered ricers but the make one for the max so eh Ill try em.

Are you talking actual headers or the Y-pipe?Originally posted by Liquid_pjear

Just curious since I have only seen one max on here with a header setup and it had issues. This was a while back.
You have any idea what he told you for gains or anything? You going to DYNO them?

I will dyno as soon as I find a place locally to dyno, I moved here not long ago. I haven't even been able to dyno my high 11 second eclipse since I did some fuel work. I will keep you guys posted and let you know how they turn out.

Cool. If you DYNO the headers seperatyl and it has decent gains I would be intrested in finding out more.Originally posted by Liquid_pjear

Oh ok. There was a thread about these a while back. Your getting the one that includes the whole Ypipe I imagine?Originally posted by Liquid_pjear

The problem is I am planning on doing the entire exhaust at the same time, if I can find a cheap place to dyno that is near here I will dyno before and after the headers.

all the name brand b-pipes are 2.5 inches in diameter - i'm guessing thats the best size according to all the research they put into it
use the search link in the upper right hand corner. someone has already tried the OBX headers, but they did not see much gain.
just get an intake and y-pipe first to see the biggest gains, and then worry about the exhaust later.

Did you really find a 95 max of any quality for 2K, or was that for a down payment? If you did then where because I think I got ripped.

There's no way he got a 95 max for $2000. Even a busted one that needs a lot of engine work will cost about that much. He probably meant $2k for a down payment. I got my 96 max for $6k earlier this year and I thought that was a good deal.Originally posted by tampamax

Ok I actually did get it for 2k well really for $1995. I got it at an acura dealership. They had screwed up and put the model year in the price box on the web page so they honored the price. I thought they were going to be ****s about it but they weren't. I actually had the clutch fail the third day I had it. I took it in and they said they would fix it (keep in mind this is an "as is no warranty" car. The clutch actually needed some adjustment but they said it was worn so they replaced it and the flywheel and the motormounts while they were there. They only charged me $150 for labor and I have a 6 month warranty on the work. So I am pleased so far.Originally posted by tampamax

Well if I had a scanner or digi cam I would show you the recieps for the car and the work done. It cost the dealership something close to 1000 for the work according to the invoice.Originally posted by I30tMikeD

dam u got hooked the F up on that max, lucky, what's the mileage on that bad boy? it BETTER be a GXE with no extra's and atleast 150,000 miles!

Always like to know of another 95 modder. That's a sick hook up for you. I'm glad they honored the price. Can't believe you got hooked on the clutch install though. You might have gotten the cheaper costing Nissan Key Value clutch. I don't know if it's inferior but it costs less. Too bad you didn't get to put a lightened flywheel in when they swapped it. That all seems odd that they would do all that freely, something seems fishy. Aside from that, if you really think you may get a turbo or supercharger down the road I would hold off on the exhuast until then and go w/ the 3". You'd find that the 2.? diameter would choke you in the high end. Good luck and welcome to the Max community - they're great cars.

My mileage is high, 180k. This thing still runs great though, I plan to keep it running great to. My last daily driver I had till 270k which wasnt much and I would still have it but I had a mechanical failure lost control and slammed into two trees three days after I got t-boned by someone running a red light at 50mph.

You are not clearing your cylinders, because you exhaust velocity has gotta be low. You may be putting out enough power so that this isn't a problem but I doubt it. Originally posted by whiteymax95

Ohh and I got a good deal but I bought it from the sullivan boys, two brothers my family has been buying cars from for years. They have always treated us well and we have always returned and sent them business.

also during low ends ur not puttin enough power through the exhaust system cuz the piping is so big, the air is not concentrated and not blasting through the muffler cuz it's so spread out, therefore u'll lose some power =XOriginally posted by Liquid_pjear

turbo/supercharger are recommanded to add bigger piping cuz it has enough power to blast through the exhaust with enough to pressure for HP gain...
hopefully tat made more sense =|

r u tryin to say that i'm losing low end power cuz my exhaust is bigger and therefore can not act like a rocket booster?? it sounds like ur tryin to tell me that exhausts can help low end power by just blowing a car forward. my car isn't exactly a feather that can just be blown forward very easily so i doubt i'm losing any noticable power

In a exhaust system you want a fast flowing exahast with the least amount of turbulance. If you use the analogy of a garden hose it's easy to see how diameter and bottle necks make a difference. A 3" exhaust is just a little too big for an NA Max. Your not pushing enough air through to get a good velocity. I am sure it is nothing dramatic just a more low end than anything else.Originally posted by whiteymax95
