Is it me or does the maxima always run rich on fuel? Everytime I come and stand by the back of the car I smell the fumes of the exhaust(I don't sniff to get high ). Can it be there is just something wrong with my car?

 

Mine's like this too. And most other 4th gens I come across still have a shiny muffler tip. Mine is pitch black with a 1/4cm layer of soot on it!

 

Do you tend to do shorter or longer trips. If shorter, or if you go WOT all the time, you'll run richer than the people who do longer trips and don't stand on it as much.
