Budget Y-Pipe

So I finally got around to installing my Budget y-pipe. I immediatly noticed the gains! What a great sounding and torquey feeling mod!

After the initial test runs, I noticed a metal to metal sound coming from the front of the car. I looked underneath and noticed the very front tube of the Budget Y-Pipe makes contact with what looks like a heat sheild for the headers? It is a sharp straight edge and it is slowly making cuts on my new y-pipe. This is happening only on the pipe closest to the front of the car. The second tube where the O2 sensor goes down the back of the engine is fine.

Has anyone experienced this with y-pipe installations? What should I do.

I installed mine and have a lot of clearance on both inlets. Once you take off the stock y pipe, you take out all the hear shields already, I thought.

That is possible. Just bend the shield up a bit.

When I first installed mine, the heatshield that was near the inlet for the y-pipe connecting to the cat was where the loud clunking was coming from at WOT...took a crowbar, and just bent it out of the way. With the car COLD or with gloves on, just get under the car and move the pipe around, and see if there would be any clearance issues with any/all of the heatshields, and bend them out of the way if necessary

You know my dumb **** did that before? The black paint was wearing off due to heat I guess, so I reached under to burn myself!

Does anyone know if you can request the Y-pipe from Budget unpainted? My reasoning is this: The paint will eventually burn off since its not powder coated, and its supposed to be stainless steel so it shouldn't rust anyway.

hehe, i just ordered my budget ypipe today...

i had a few emails out to both budget and warpspeed. i got an email from dallas at warpspeed after ordering from budget. i thought it was one of the other people at budget for some reason. i told him i ordered from jeff and was wondering if he could get me a tracking number... his response was funny:

Sorry, we don't have a Jeff.

regards
Dallas

lol, he knew exactly what i did i also ordered a magnaflow 14829 .

btw, do i need to get gaskets and bolts, or does budget provide them?

Jeff only supplies the gaskets with the Y pipe.

Does anyone know if the Cali spec y-pipe from budget has the same gains as the Fed spec y-pipe from budget?

Thanks.

Is there an easier way to determine wether you have Fed or Cali specs without removing the heatshield?

yes, look at the front of your engine, towards the front of the car, there are two plugs there if you have fed spec, and 3 if you have cali spec. one of them goes to the drivers side O2 sensor, and i assume the extra plug for cali spec is for the third O2 sensor on the y pipe.

Federal

Yay, thank you for nagging at me. I really appreciate, and so will my Max in a few weeks, months, depending on when I finally order.

Sorry bud, I'm in the same dilema as you. Since we have the 5th gen cali-spec type exhaust we have to keep one of the pre-cats. Therfore, we get somewhere near half the actual performance increase of a fed-spec exhaust aftermarket y-pipe.

Err, by the way. How exactly can you tell? I mean it tells you to look for #3&4 but I cant tell where they are looking at, unless it is under the heatshield. But anyway if you can tell me how you decyphered from federal/cal I would greatly appreciate it. I really dont wanna go speding $160 for something that isnt gonna fit.

The FAQs has a guide on how to tell if it's cali or fed spec..

open your hood, look for metal plate on the left side..

look for a number something like this (might be off):

B L H U L _ _ _ _ _ _ U ...

if there's a U in the 12th digit place then it's fed spec.

Does anyone have a complete write-up of specifically the budget fed-spec y-pipe install?
