18x8 is preferred by most, the tire 235-40-18 will fit a
little better= better handling. You could get away with
either, just don't do a 18x7- too narrow.

1/2 inch
Dang got it b4 me!!!

Its the width of the rim, if you can choose between the sizes get the 18x8's but I dont think it matters too much. I have 18x7.5in rims on my car.

All tire manufactures recommend min. of 8" for 235/40/ZR18 size tires. Yes, there are plenty of people running 235/40/ZR18 on 7.5" without problems. I have done it. It all depends how much risk you are willing to take. There are more choices for 18X7.5" wide rims because they fit most Acura/Honda. With 8" wide rims, you could mount 245/40ZR18 for even more traction.

Brushed gold tone wheels on a beige Maxima. Nice

By the way, I get the impression, from the very small part of the tread that I see in your PIC, that your uni-directional tires may have been mounted backwards

A tire would pop off the rim while you take that posted 25 mph at 80 mph. This cause you to totally loose control of your car and smash into the guard rail. You car flips up a few times and end up on a tree. Your insurance finds out you mounted 235/40/ZR18 on 18X7.5" rims and deny your claim. Now you are in a world of hurt.

Same also applies for those going with 235/45/17 on 17x7.
