Given a 1999 Maxima SE

First let me say thank you to Mrs. Joan Hart for her generous gift.

Well this whole thing starts with my getting a new car a 2002 Maxima SE and a new job. After three months of driving back and forth I notice that I’m putting a lot of miles on the Max so, I figure when I get my Christmas bonus I’ll get a commuter car so that I can keep the miles down on the new car. So on Monday my neighbor Mrs. Hart is visiting when I get home to let my wife and me now that on Wednesday her son is coming to get her because she’s decided to move to Florida to be closer to her children who all live there. My wife and I ask is there anything we can do to help her get ready and she said no that over the last few years we’ve done more than enough for her. Well earlier today as she and her son where getting ready to leave they come over to my house and I’m expecting that this is just to say our last goodbyes and farewells but what happens next just blows me away. Mrs. Hart asked me if I’ve found a car yet and I said no maim I’m still looking then she says “ well you’ve helped me so much sense my husbands death I’d like to give you something “ now I have no ideal what’s going on but they ask me to come outside. She says I’d like you to have this and I say have what? Then her son points to a car one I haven’t seen in two years it’s her husband car a 1999 Maxima SE. So after saying no I can’t take it that it’s to big a gift she says nonsense that “you need a car and I have a car that I’m not taking with me“. So I say well at least let me give you the money that I have and she refuses. By this time her son is laughing at me and leans over and says “now you know you cant win this argument right” that’s when I realized that yeah he’s right and I graciously accept her gift. So to that I say thank you Mrs. Hart you are the best.

Now to you guys in the Org. I’ve paid some bills and I have $800.00 left what is the best way to go with some mild upgrades? Should I go with the same as the 2002 front strut brace and rear sway bar or is the 1999 a totally different animal?

OMG I'm so jellous. Why can't these things ever happen to
me. The front and rear sway bar will help big time with the handling. If your looking for a few more horses get an intake and Y-pipe, that will give you a decent boost in power. Probably around 15-20 horsepower. Also got to have the clear corners.

Treat the car with respect...

don't "rice" it out. congrats.

Performance: 1. Ypipe (keep your stock muffler) $240
you will "FEEL" the power and not sound rice/loud.

Handling: 1. Eibach Prokit with KYB AGX $560
The drop is right, easy install...awesome settings.

I'm a 99SE. enjoy the ride.

LOL...I thought you said you were looking for a "commuter car"? Now that you got one you're gonna turn it into a race car!!! At least it'll make your "commute" a lot shorther!

Congrats... considering you want it to be a commuter car, I would definately get an intake and y-pipe to help out your gas mileage. Everything else depends on what you want. If you are going to be in the car a lot, I would spend the rest of the cash on a sound system. Your possibilities are endless.

congratulations! That is a wonderful, if barely believable and all too rare kind of story.

Anyway, there are a lot of typical things you can do to the car. My recommendations for handling are:

FSTB, RSB,
tires,
KYB AGX struts/shocks,
B&G or H&R springs,
Sub-frame connectors.

My recommendations for other mods are:

slotted brakes and better pads,
intake and midpipe or CAI, Y-pipe,
SS brake lines, MEVI.

This is generally in order of "importance" and feasibility.

I hope I interpreted your question correctly: Yes, you will need to get a different generation Front Strut Tower Brace (4th obviously). RSB...as far as I know, Stillen may bridge the gap, but Addco may need a 4th generation as well.

As far as first mods...

FSTB - Makes steering easier and more nimble at any speed.
RSB - Makes rear "tuck-in" behind front, following the steering line better after making a corner.
RSTB - Eliminates "squibble" felt in rear after cornering.
That's all of the suspension mods I've personally done so far.

Performance...definately a Y-pipe. If you looking to keep it quiet, only to a B-pipe after that (between the catalytic converter and muffler). I'd say keep your stock cat as mine has broken down completely (RT Cat) and now I'm an environmental hazard...
Intake - quiet jet engine hiss sound at idle (at least with my Cold Air Intake), very nice ripping, screaming, throaty sound when the RPM's are punched. If you only do normal driving, you won't notice much.
Muffler - Ever wanted to sound like a V-8? I love my muffler, very nice throaty cruising and acceleration punch to it.

That's all the advice I can offer right now...the pedal covers do help if you wear leather shoes...clear corner (diamond type) are a must...and if you do decide to get a high-flow cat (not all RT Cats break down like mine...warpspeedperformance.com has a metal substrate one too), please sell me yours? Thanks. Oh, if you want to keep your stock wheels, get Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions in 215/55/16. Tire upgrades are most noticeable in street cars (improve braking, acceleration, turning, etc. anything that is moving the car has to be done through a tire.) www.tirerack.com, go there, look them up, see the tests, then get them... I guess that's about it, your only limited by your wallet. Later!

Chris

Wow, that is nice of them.

I agree with most of the responses. Get the FSTB, RSB, intake and Y and you're on your way. Then the rest of the $ is for gas... how many miles are you traveling round trip to work?

Wow!

Don't be to quick to spend your money until after you have your title and registration. Some states are greedy and require you to pay taxes on the book value of the car as though it were a sale!

Thanks guys for all your suggestions and for not calling me a liar because I now my story is really unusual but, true none the less. Some of you guys wanted to now haw the car was equipped so here you go. 15000 miles, beige exterior, tan cloth interior, cassette/CD stereo, cruise control, tilt steering, power windows, power locks, keyless remote entry, driver power seat, power mirrors, sunroof, spoiler, alloy wheels. Not fully loaded but all the good stuff. As for pictures I’ll have some after the holidays when get my new digital camera (the one she tried to hide, silly girl). So every body have a good holiday I’ll talk to you guys later.

Wow! A free car, AND only 15,000 miles! I am sooooo jealous. For X-mas, my parents told me they are paying a month of my car insurance, and I was extatic. Good luck with the car, and have a good Holiday.

This is how I would spend $800 on a max:
-$20 Clear corners
-$150 Dark Tint windows
-$50 All car bulb upgrades
-$200 Frankencar with apexi filter
-$160 Budget Y-Pipe
-$20 FSTB from ebay
-$125 RSB (progress, addco)

This leaves you with $75 left over for gas or I would buy tons of wax and car wash stuff and detail the crap out of my car
Lata,
Dan

Very nice. I'm a firm believer in "Karma" or "what goes around comes around".

My dad recently gave me his "old" 97 GLE over Thanksgiving, so I can relate. I've put clear corners in, rewired the clearance lights, put the upper part of a Cold Air Intake in and replaced the stock headlight bulbs with Silverstar 9004 bulbs.

Next on my list is a nose bra (peeling paint off the bumper from my step-mom not watching behind her as she backed out of the driveway), a Front Strut Tower Bar/Brace, Budget Y-pipe, then Rear Anti-sway bar, and eventually upgraded springs and shocks. All those will get me over 200hp at the crank and some awesome handling. Eventually I'm going to find some SE rims for my baby, but that's last on my list, I'll stick with the sawblades until then.
