Since we're going to nitpick, the book says 9.125-10.125 pints. I've seen some of them swallow all 5 quarts

Keep pouring it in...once it startes to leak out-its full. Somewhere around 4.5 quarts is right but don't just stop...you need to go until its full. This is one casae where a slight overfill will not hurt but underfill would.

I put in 4 quarts into my 98 SE, so does my dad (in his 96 GXE). Mobil 1. Please tell me that's not too little, because I'm going to start crying if I'm messin up my baby.

With the car level, was gear oil running out the fill plug? If not, it's underfilled. Just add more until it starts to run out. If so, it just means that you didn't drain it as completely as you could have.

Well what me and my dad do is we buy the Mobil 1 and filter, and take it to a mechanic for the oil change. They drain it, and change it. I assume that they let everything drain out. But thanks for the info, I tink from now on we put in 4.5

I think you are missing the point or a bit confused. These guys are talking about manual transmission , gear oil and not Engine oil. If I am correct there is no filter when changing manual transmission gear oil! I hope you were directing your response to engine oil ?! I am not flaming you , just trying to clarify the post .
