I just got off the phone with Courtesy and they say there is two of them. How do I tell which one is bad?

I was thinking of just ordering the cheaper one ($30).

BTW... Where are these located and yes I'm ordering a manual when I order it.

Thanks a million

Diagnostic Trouble Code 0103 points to the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. There is only one of those.

This is like using a dart board to decide which stock to buy. You might get lucky. You might not.

Where are these located ...[/I]
On the 4th Generation Maxima engine the two temperature sensors are located in the water outlet tube close to the engine end of the upper radiator hose. The one nearest the hose is for the dashboard temperature gauge. The ECTS, the one you are interested in, is right next to the the gauge sending unit. There is a good picture of these sensors in the Haynes manual on page 3-7.

For most home mechanics the Haynes manual is a good choice. If you care to read a detailed comparison of service manuals, go to http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/manualcompare.html

I only paid $30 at the dealer for mine and btw do it asap cause that sensor has the ability to cause hard starting and/or stalling for what seems to be no apparent reason.

There is usually a testing procedure in the FSM to tell if a sensor unit is good or bad. You usually have measure the voltage between two wires.

I wanted to follow up on this post.

It took me a total of 20 minutes to replace this part.

2 minutes to locate an appropriate sized hood support (read 2x4).

5 minutes to find the sensor. Btw... It on the battery side of the engine right off the side of the engine cover that everyone loves to paint red.

4 minutes to find my socket wrench. I really need to clean off that bench.

3 minutes to remove a portion of the air box.

2 minutes to remove and replace the sensor.

1 minute to reinstall the air box stuff.

Shut hood, start engine, crap lights still on! It must be something else! Damn....

Say bad words for 3 minutes.

Realize that I should try resetting the check engine light.

3 minutes to reset check engine light.

Start car, problem solved. Thanks a bunch guys.

You will find instructions to do a DTC readout and reset
the Check Engine light at Steve Cutchen's excellent MaxFAQs page:
http://web2.airmail.net/scutchen/max_faq/

This material is also covered the both the Chilton and Haynes manuals.

Glade for the info

I have had the 0103 code a couple of times, and the 0304 code. So I think my best aproach would be to replace Coolant Temp. Sensor first and see if that takes car of the the Knock Sensor code. Oh Wizeguy, was the 0103 code the only one that showed up, or did you have a 0304 code too?

the haynes' manual states you have to remove coolant before replacing the sensor, but if not necessary than that's grrreat since i recently flushed mines
