You're gonna have to disconnect the filter from the piping (pull the wheel off, all that crap) then clean it. I'd use a brush to get all the major crap off the filter, then K&N filter cleaning stuff. Make sure to oil it afterwards too. The cleaner and oil come in the same kit, and you should be able to find them at most auto parts stores. Directions are on the box.

I have a similar question. I have a Place Racing CAI, and I got it when I bought the car. Now I don't know how long the intake has been on there, 1998 MAX SE w/ 82,xxx miles. How soon should I clean/replace the filter?

DO NOT USE a brush. The earlier CAIs came with K&N filters. Just buy a K&N filter recharger kit ($8) from your local auto parts store and follow the directions on the box. K&N recommends that you clean the filter once every 50K miles. This does not apply to hi performance intakes like the CAI . . .as you will soon find out, the CAI filter gets dirty real fast. You probably should clean it once a year.

You can use a brush, just be gentle about it, you're not scrubbing the filter with it.

Yes. Pull off the wheel. Then you'll have 2 or 3 screws/fasteners you'll need to undo to be able to pull back the splashgaurd. The filter will be right there, and you'll need a screwdriver to undo the clamp holding it on. Pull it off, clean, then put it back on.

Might be a good time to convert to a hybrid intake...

Sigh, the burdens of a High-Performance CAI.

The CAI filter sits in front of the front wheel well, just behind the driver side foglight. You don't need to take the wheel off. Just remove the front part of the wheel well cover by the foglight.

Alot of conflicting advice here.

I should've pointed out, I have a 5th gen. The splashgaurd won't come off that way on mine, believe me, I tried. Sorry for the confusion, wasn't really thinking about that.
