I don't think it matters. Just find a seller who claims the remote to be brand new, and look for one in the range of around $22-$25 w/ no more than $4 shipping on it.

Does anyone know FOR SURE?

Do the remotes that look like this work on a '96 Maxima?

The one I have looks like this. I like the one above better tho.

Has anyone used the newer style with a older Maxima?

Nope only the one you have will work for the 4th Gens. The top picture is a remote for a 5th Gen.

When you get the new remote, what do you have to do in order to activate the same frequency as your car? My remote has gone out as well and it ****es me off!

make sure you get the right remote cause the remotes for the 95/967 are different from the 97-99......i think the 97+ dont have the light button

You have to get in the car roll up all windows and lock the doors.
Then you insert the key in and out 6 times (quickly like within 10 seconds) until your hazards blink. then turn the ignition to ACC and hit a button on the remote. If it works your hazards will blink again. Pull the key out of the ignition, unlock the doors manually and open the door.
Now test it out and see if it works.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter.

Both are for the 5th gen Max, both are new, both have "buy it now" for only $9.00, and both have free shipping. Someone go snag those now!
