Cooling Fan on/off switch - pros/cons?

Hey guys, I was at the track the other day and some guy with an older MX-6 turbo was demonstrating for one of their forums how having the fan on can positively affect your times/trap speeds in their cars.

He wired his fan so that with a flip of a switch he can have it on, therefore adding more airflow to the engine bay. His times were almost a little better but with more gains in the trap speed. I'm assuming that the power needed to run the fans might've slowed his start a lil.

This brings me to my question(s)...

What are the pros/cons of having the fan on while at the track? And will this help me out since i'm automagic with an Injen RDI? Also, how practical would it be to mount small fans around the air filter of the Injen to feed it cooler air, or neutralize the warmer air in the engine bay?

Thanks ahead of time

-Mario

Are you sure he wasn't running his cooling fan manually through the on/off switch **between** runs to cool down his engine a little quicker?

During the 1/4 mile run, you want almost every electrical component off so that the alternator does not have to run as hard, taking more power from the engine.........

One of the guys did a write-up on this; I have it printed out for my list of things I need to do this winter.

I think Jime was the original author....

Yeah, you're right. I vaguely recall seeing a wiring schematic. But for some reason, your link is showing me a 404 Error.

Its a good thing for the track because you can turn it off to use less power for racing but other than that I cant think of any reason why you would want to do this.

i can tell you why it should be done, i have a multichecker and even in the winter my coolant temps skyrocket a good performance temp would around 165 degrees, a max in cool weather levels around 185 thats highway driving easy. Even at 185 our thermostats <two> dont want to open they open fully around 200-205 thats far to late HEATSOAK. I wish i could find lower thermostats, the one actually opens around i think 226! double heatsoak. We need thermostats to have a peak at most around 180. When i get my switch installed i will leave it on 80% of the time.this would help your engine to be less stresed in the summer.

Well I did this, but my battery was so close to being dead that I wasn't able to even use it between runs so I can't say if it helped me any or not. But I would think that cool air blowing on it for say 5-10 mins between runs wouldn't hurt..

Hmm.. I'm familiar with the wiring instructions and the small info about the functionality as written in the FAQs... but i'm not asking for how to install... i'm just asking about practicality.

I myself thought it was impractical to have the fan on because of the juice it uses. His fan is smaller, and he specifically stated that he'd leave it on to keep the engine cool during the runs. We had our own group of skeptics but his times/trap speeds left us puzzled... i can't quite remember what they were, only that my friend commented that the runs seemed pretty consistent so he couldn't have been trying to trick people into doing that mod. Like i said before, his 60 times fell a little but once he got speed he would pull harder and end up with higher traps.

He had a homemade hyperground kit so i don't know if that changes anything.

Well, thanks to all for the feedback on this...

Now I'm wondering, what if i get a couple of those small desk fans and wire them to a small battery in close proximity to the Injen intake, and have tubing mounted in the oem foglight holes and aim that air through the fans and into the air filter... it seems like maybe less than 10lbs of stuff without tapping into the car's juice. Will that be allowed at the track though?

That will be allowed but can you say, "Vapor Lock?" You dont wanna suck water into your Intake.

Jime is the one that wrote this, i did this to my car and it works great. In between runs with the hood open and the fans going it moves a lot of hot air you just hve to be careful not to run your battery dead. I leave it on for around 20 mins, give or take. Brian
