97+ Maximas- Do or Did you have the option of an IN-console cupholder?

I just heard about this as being an option for 96 (my 96 did not have one), and now that I have a 97+ console, it has me wondering...

It's something a lot of people don't know about. In '96 they added a removable cupholder to the inside of the armrest storage. It was one of the few changes from '95 to '96...It hooks on to the front of the storage. It doesn't have a cutout for a mug handle but it is deep and has two tiers to accomidate various cup sizes. The negative is your armrest door needs to stay open so you lose your armrest when using the cupholder. But at least two people can have drinks...you do lose about 25-33% of your storage...But at least it's an option. I am curious if the '97-'99s have this cupholder (or capability to install it).
As you can see, ptatohed brought it to my attention, but now my curiosity is piqued. So dodes anyone knwo anything about them being an option in 97+ Maximas?

Patrick, I tried doing a little searching for you on the internet.

"1997+Nissan+Maxima+standard+equipment"

Not that many helpful results. And I'm at work so I can't keep messing with it. This doesn't help too much but this is from Consumer Reports site:

Year-to-Year Changes

""""1996: The GLE edition added a 4-way power seat for the front passenger, which was also newly optional in the SE. Also, a large cupholder was installed in the central console.

1997: Maximas earned a facelift for 1997, led by a fresh front end with a different grille and brighter headlights. Rear ends wore new taillights and a redesigned trunk lid.

1998: Front side airbags are made available on SE and GLE versions of the Maxima.

1999: Available traction control was the main addition as Nissan's flagship headed into the final year of its current design. All models also got minor trim revisions and a standard anti-theft engine immobilizer. A redesigned, more powerful Maxima debuted in spring 1999, as an early 2000 model.""""

http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/u...fm/id/2214.htm

For 1997+, it doesn't say they took the cupholder away but then again it doesn't even mention a redesigned dash so it isn't 100% complete anyway.

I'm guessing if no one answers you with a yes, the answer is a no. This is what I would do. Call a local dealer (or two) and tell them you have a 1997 and you want to buy the cupholder that goes in the console. See what they say. There's a chance it wasn't offered but it may work if you bought a '96 cupholder. Good luck.

No, cupholders were never options. Every Maxima has the two (rinky dinky) cupholders to the right of the e-brake. What we are talking about is the removable cupholder in the armrest storage intoduced in '96 (standard). I am 100% positive that the '95s don't have it, I am 100% the '96s did come with it but the question is, did the '97-'99s come with it?

And if not, can they add it?

My '96 GXE had the removable plastic cup holder that fits in a slot in the front of the center console. My '97 SE has the slot, but I didn't get the actual cup holder (bought the car used). If I had known I was getting the '97 when my '96 was totalled, I would have kept it. (But then I'd have to find a different, easily accessible place for my Springfield .45 and spare mags; it's legal to carry firearms anywhere in a vehicle in Louisiana ). It was convenient. I kept mine under the passenger seat when not in use. I could also use it with the armreast down (effectively "concealing" the drink) as long as it wasn't a very tall cup.

No, not this one:

There is a seperate one that was available INSIDE the console (under the armrest) in 96. I am trying to figure out if it was available in 97 as well, or is they got rid of it when they redesigned the ones pictured above in 97.

Nope, never seen one on a 1997-1999 that was inside the console, under the armrest.

Re: 97+ Maximas- Do or Did you have the option of an IN-console cupholder?

I've had a fully loaded '96 SE and currently have a fully loaded '99 SE. My 96 did come with that removable cup holder. Didn't use it because it was a hassle being inside the center armrest. On my 99, the slot to insert the cup holder is there, but I wasn't supplied. I kept my 96 cup holder and it does fit in 99.

It wasn't an option in my 96 nor 99. I believe Nissan just did away with it sometime between 96 and 99.

Thanks Sigh. I think you gave us our answer. A.) No it was not provided with the '97/'99s but B.) it does fit.

phen, did you get a price from the dealer? (Or better yet, Courtesy?)

Now one last questions remains. Will this cupholder fit in '95s?!

phen, I contacted Courtesy Nissan for you to get the price of the '96 cupholder. It is pretty pricey at $11.78, with a Maxima.org discount. Also, there is a minimum $8.00 shipping!!!! Try the dealer or maybe a junkyard. Good luck.

Gee, they even ran the stock wood dash all the way up.
And now I know where to install another 12v power ouutlet.
Anyone read Korean?? Go to this site and translate for us. Maybe we can get some group deals on accessories.

Now WHY didn't Nissan build a console like that? Idiots! Don't they know creature comforts sell cars in America?? Because we can only drive 55-70mph, we can eat, drink, rock, and drive all at the same time, so we need a place to put our food, drinks, CD's, and even spare change!
