New mod for automatics??

Hey, anyone ever notice on your instrument cluster, in the back of it, you have the sockets for lights down the center? This is for a gear selector in the dash. No stupid, I don't mean the actual lever, just lights for park, reverse, etc... I'm not sure if it's powered though, and it is too cold to test mine now. So, does anyone know anything about this? I have seen it on JDM maxima's, and wondering if it would work on ours.

I'm getting tired of looking down at the lights. It reminds me of Hundai or something.

I'm curious about this too. I replaced my cluster bulbs with some red 194's and noticed the holes and wondered. Anyone know if this is an easy mod?
Cheers,

You mean the 'PRND21' display, right?

As cool as this would be, looks like it's not possible. I guess Cefiro's have them, but we are not wired for them.

well...those Samsumg 4th gens for sale in Korea...

have the PRND21 on the dash...I dunno if you can swap their version
into our cars, because, dash trim aside, something has to trigger the
right lights to turn on.

my $0.02,

Yea, apparently we don't have the switch or whatever it is that needs to trigger the lights. It would be cool if we could get the parts from the SM5 or something... but where would we get part numbers, and then where would we order them from?

I would assume there would be lots of wiring also.

Well, I've been to Korea about 15 times. i can read and pronounce words even though I have no clue what they mean.

I have driven the "Samsung" 4th gen car plenty of times. Actually, it is an Infiniti I30 rather than a Maxima. The parts are 100% Japanese and the only difference is that they are assembled in Korea and they put the "Samsung" name on the car. All 4th gens assembled in Korea stayed in Korea. The rest of the world got their 4th gens from Japan. This arrangement was/is a way for Koreans to get a Japanese car without having to pay the typical 50% import tax markups.

Getting back to the point, they have those PRND21 lights but I think the US spec Infiniti I30s have the same lights.

Looks like the U.S. I30's don't have it
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....+gauge+cluster (look towards the bottom and a few with the I30 say they don't)

Kinda off the topic, but "Samsung" is a division of the Nissan Co.

Why would you need this? Besides the cool factor perhaps...

If you don't know what gear selection your in while driving an automagic, then you really shouldn't be driving at all.

this was discussed in depth before, bulbs in the cluster are not connected to anything, also you need to replace the black bezel plate with a one that has PRND window. = alot of work, no one has done it.

Cool factor is the only reason. Plus, I drive in 2nd gear alot because I live in a mountainous area. I have forgotten that I have left it in 2 sometimes. Maybe this would help. But mainly because it's different from other Max's.

Is pulling out the cluster a project, or is it just the few screws holding the cluster trim, and then some screws holding the cluster itself in?!?! I want to put some super white or red or something cool in the cluster.....

I know this doesn't pretain to the original topic about the dash (which would be awesome to have).

What engine is used in the Korean SM series Maxima/I30? From what I understand from their website (with no knowledge of Korean) there is a 173 HP 2.4L DOHC V6 available. Is this a Nissan engine design? Is it related to the VG, VE or VQ series engines? I found a very small image of the engine, and although it's hard to tell, it does appear similar to a VQ.

What do you think? Anybody who can read Korean, help us out?

No, removing the cluster is not hard at all. Remove the two screws holding the surroundings in place, the remove the three screws holding the dash in place. Some of the work is delicate, so don't pull on anything too hard. I'm not very good at wording stuff, so PM me if you have any ?'s

its a piece of cake!
I can tear it out in 15 minutes with my experience
it IS a little delicate at times...for example, I scratched the
leather on my steering wheel...
