Pics of EGT probe location, anyone?

I know many who have installed their probe in the Y pipe, install where the 2 down pipes meet?

Does anyone have a picture of where they located the probe?

The shop I use is welding the bung in tomorrow and I am hoping someone can help me out.

Thanks!
D

Thanks..... I am sure the exhaust shop has an idea but I prefer to find out what you all have done.....

Being there are not too many modded Maxima's around my way.

I'm planning to install both the EGT probe and the Budget Y-pipe tomorrow as well. Someone has mentioned placing it right where the pipes meet while another had drilled into the exhaust manifold. I'm inclined to drill a hole and weld a bung onto the Y-pipe. I'm just wondering whats the best way.

You need to mount it as close to the exhaust port as possible. The center runner of the front manifold is a good place. If you mount it down in the Y-pipe collector, you wont get very useful readings.

Do you have to take off the front exhaust manifold heat shield before tapping or can it be done from below?

I did my EGT and Coolant temp gauges at the same time so...

I did take off the front heat shield and radiator fan assembly (plus the upper radiator hose cuz of my coolant probe install) to give me room. There is a spot under the heat shield (but above the manifold flange)perfect for the drilling so you don't have to modify the heat shield at all. Obviously I took off my Y pipe so the metal shavings wouldn't screw up my catalytic... You'll need a several drill bits and the appropriate (NPT) tap and handle. Use cardboard to protect the fins of the radiator just in case.

I got my bung welded in yesterday. Took it to the exhaust shop that does all of my work for me and they had it installed in about five minutes. We then hooked up the probe wires, shrunk the shrink tube and were good to go.

My Cost: $21.00 and got to watch the whole process, free learning experience

When facing the car, the bung is welded on the right side of the Y pipe at the union of the two down pipes.

When driving last night temps are between 700 and 800 at cruising speed. At full throttle it climbs up between 1000 and 1100.

At idle when warmed up it is around 200- 300.

Do these readings seem typical? Based on the threds I have read, these seem to be correct.

What readings are the rest of you getting ?

Cruising?

Idle?

WOT?

Thanks,

Dave

well mine is tapped right behind the weld for the two pipes from the front and rear bank...

Worst case scenario, the egt's are slightly lower than they should be right?... how many degrees need to be compensated for?

How is everyone welding their probes? My exhaust shop couldn't weld mine for b/c my fitting was brass and my pipes were stainless steel..

And my exhaust is leaking now..

For those of you who tapped it, what size hole did you have to drill?

I think it will depend on the BRAND of gauge... IIRC, mine was 1/4" NPT.
