How much would you pay?

I need some advice here...

How much would you pay for a '98 SE (5speed) with 90,000mi (highway), 2nd owner, clean Carfax, sunroof, power seats, etc??

NADA: $12,455
KBB: $9,050 (private party; excellent)
Asking: $10,900

Thanks.

Go to Edmunds.com and get a True Market Value price...Ive found those to be very accurate because they account for everything, including location.

$9000 is what you should take it for, so start the lowballing at $8500. It never hurts to try.

Edmunds says my car is worth $8k.

But I saw a clone of my car at the dealer gong for $15,400 the other day.

There was a 1999 Model with 30k (miles) and they wanted $21,000.

Gawd I hate dealers - because I know if I traded it in, they'd give me like $5k for it, then turn around and sell it for $14k.

what's odd is that here in the NW, maximas can pull good resale prices. KBB for my car is like $6500 trade in, $7200 private party. look in the paper and you can see the same maxima going or $10K.

Value depends on region & can vary greatly.

Try the Edmunds link or www.kbb.com

I saw a 98 GXE 5 speed with 60000 miles on it for 8300, I would probably do 9000 for that one.

Good Luck,

For what it's worth, I am looking at a '99 SE manual with 49,000 miles and will probably end up buying it for $13,500. That's with new brakes, new tires, power roof, extended warranty and a respectable deal on my trade. It was in line with all the sources I checked as well.

The car was actually advertised for $17,500. I showed the dealer another ad from another dealer at $13,900 for essentially the same car and he immediately came down to $13,500 without any problem.

Do dealers really believe that some sucker will pay 4k over a fair price just because its been marked up?

Whenever I see a dealer price, I take like 20% off that as the "real" price. Dealers love cash. No trade in and buying with cash means a lot of bargaining power.

This '98 Im looking at is a private party. I ran its VIN and the guy was telling the truth. He got it 2 years ago with 35,000mi on it....now its got 90,000. Try and put 55,000 city miles on in 2 years is South Dakota! I didnt even tell him I ran the Carfax, but his story matched anyways.

Edmunds TMV: $9,464 (clean)
$10,121 (outstanding)

I think I might drive up there Monday and offer him $9,000.

What do you guys think of an Altima or 626?

You seem set on buying the Maxima, yet you ask about a car that's in a lower class? I loved my altima when I had it, but it just doesn't compare to a maxima. As for the 626, when I had an altima, I still thought the 626 was crap

Autos are a dime a dozen compared to manuals.

I would have had a car already if I wanted an auto.

I've got the same issue. I'd have a max already at a better price if I wanted an auto because they are all over the place. But I want a manual and according to all the advertising sources I've looked at there is only one for sale in the area. The dealer is also a new Nissan dealer and is smart enough to know that someone looking specifically for a manual is doing so because that particular car is desired and hard to find and can weasel a few more bucks even though the car's value should be a little lower.
