I have a 96 Max GXE Auto. I have 17" Borbet Type Es with Bridgestone Potenza RE730s. With the exception of a FSTB and a big stereo, my car is stock.

Ive heard about turning overdrive off, manually starting in 1st shifting to 2nd at around 20 mph and then to drive around 40, and other tips.

What is the best way to drag race lets say from 0-70+ mph.

thanks

Is it turbo?

You should take him easy if not. If you really want to add some pep to that 96 get a UPRD ECU with the group deal going on now. If you don't know about it and want info email me.

Ok..DCmax, if you want the fastest way to say....90.
Start out in 1st manually, accelerate fully in 1st till you reach about 6200 rpm, then veryyyy quickly shift to 2nd. By the time the tranny does it's shift, you'll have reached redline(or close). Then 2nd gear will start out at a higher RPM because you held it higher in 1st...Powerband baby. Then hold 2nd untill 6200 or so and shift to 3rd, you'll now be at around 80 or more, and will then again be in the powerband of 3rd. 3rd meaning Drive postion without overdrive on. You are now done, and the 300zx n/a will be surprised...probably.

Oh...

Don't try this method(in a race) unless you have practiced already.

How much faster...

will it be if i shift like that versus just turning overdrive off and flooring it....by the way the 300zx isnt turbo.

To play it safe turn O/D off and keep it in second.
should take you up to 80 no problem. That way there is only one auto shift for you from 1st to 2nd. No need to go faster then that on the street. I would practice also, letting off the gas a second while the auto shifts. This will prevent wear of the clutch plates prematurely.

Every little bit counts when in a race. Good its not a turbo
I can't tell an actual measured(in time) difference between the two, but I can tell you that when you practice this method you'll then realize your car can be made to go quicker than leaving it in D.

Roadkill

hey, a friend of mine has a '84 300zx turbo, manual tranny...i pulled up on him at a light and we both decided to go for it...while at the light i had the car in 1st...light turned green and I gunned it...he also gunned it..I red-lined it in first, then shifted into 2nd and redlined it, by now he was eating my dust and fuming that an Automatic Maxima with just an intake beat him!! We pulled over and he congratulated me on my win!!...but if you dont go all the way up << redline >> in first and also in second...he'll **** on you...give the z credit it was quick...if you want to win you have to do what it takes!!

there's been some speculation...

first off, is it actually at redline that it is the best time to switch gears on an auto?

and secondly, what is better for street racing, O/D on or off? i've tried it off and it gives you a bigger kick....but i don't want to increase the chances of ruining my tranny by running at high speeds with it on.

oh and one last thing. if you burn out (tires screech, car doesn't move for an instant) does this damage your flywheel? i dunno my friend was tellin me about this but i'm not sure if it was for an auto or manual. thanks.

shifting auto

if u doing it manually shift at 6k redline shifting l8tr than tht car just sits at 6700 rpm then shifts waste of time & isnt good and max looser power in redline i think. since u got 17 rev a 1700 with brake and let go that wht i do.

best way and safest

If you are going to shift your auto.. Then you'll be heading to the tranny repair real soon. Any ways, i rev my engine to about 3000 RPM leaving it in drive. Once the light turns green im off and aloha to that GT mustang!
