Timing problem(?)

The last few months my car has been starting pretty poorly. Sometimes it would start perfect, a split second turn of the key would do it. Usually, it would crank a few times then die really quickly, then start cranking again. This didn't bother me too much, but I tried changing the fuel filter, air filter and plugs. I didn't manage to change the fuel filter (I think a lot of you know why), but the other changes didn't affect the start. I have also recently changed the battery and starter, so it's not those either. Also I have noticed some lagging when I accelerate, that usually goes away around 2500 RPMS or so. This seems to me like either a timing or fuel issue. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot.

Also, why am I still a newbie? I've been on this forum since I got my car 2 years ago
