Y-pipe vs MEVI.....what's better?

I'm going to end up getting both, but I'm just curious. Of you all that have both, which one gave a better "seat of the pants" performance increase the y-pipe or the MEVI? Thanks.

I too was curious, doesn't the MEVI give you a "kick in the pants" HP gain, but what does it do for torque? I'm looking to get more torque for 'cruisin', i hardly ever/never go above 4-4.5K, and that's if I'm tryin to get ahead. So will it boost the torque or eat it up? What about the Y-pipe? Just wonderin.

MEVI will actually hurt you until you're above 5500rpm.

You should get Intake/Y-pipe first, and then get the MEVI. That way you won't be hurting your daily drive performance to the point where it's worse than stock.

the only mevi'd car that i sat in had a y pipe i guees, coupled to a turbo

Not sure if it was the turbo or the vi mainly, or a combo of both, but the maxima pulls like no other. Im scd, and it hauls ***, but once u get towards redline, u can definately feel less power being made, but my friend's car with the vi, just keeps pulling till it shifts.

As far as a mod that you can feel better, Id say y pipe because it's cheaper and you feel it throughout the entire rpm band; besides, it costs 160 shipped from budget, or 500+ currently from overseas for the vi.

Go with the Y pipe first. It's cheaper, easier to install, and gives better overall gains.

If Cattman doesnt give any word soon about their prototype header, then I'll definitely go with a Y-pipe for my next power mod, but I don't want to get it and 2 months later Cattman say "we got it out now". any news?

Go Y pipe and intake first.....then the VI. VI alone will not really help you where you need it to.

It doesn't sound like the VI is for you. You would definitely lose some of the 'cruisin' torque, at the expense of a whole new topend. The y-pipe will improve performance all around.

Also take into consideration that I was with you, rarely getting past 5000 RPM before I got my VI. But now that it just pulls so beautifully all the way to redline... well, I certainly see that end of the tach more often.

Get the y-pipe first, for sure. Under $200 shipped to your door in under a week (from budget). Can't beat it.

It refers to RPM's above around 5k (opinions on were to activate the mevi vary). So not just over 100mph. Just in the upper part of the RPM range

It's a Middle Eastern Variable Intake. Here's a thread with more than you would ever want to know about it. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=217001.

Top end is more of a referance to the higher rpm range of each gear....but it can also be used to mean top higher speeds. They are kinda one in the same.

99 SE-L Auto: Intake, Y-pipe, UDP, MEVI 15.4 @ 89 MPH

Middle Eastern Variable Intake 95-99 Nissan Maxima

Here is the question i asked a expert. I have a Intake and a y-pipe. I am thinking about doing the mevi, if i don't like it i sell it used.

You shouldn't lose a lot of low end power although like a header, things
that improve breathing usually are higher end power gains and sometimes it
also pulls the powerband slightly to the right (to the higher rpms).
Although you really don't have a big loss at the low end, you will feel more
gains up top.

I don't really see the point in spending all the cash on MEVI unless you can get an upgraded ecu with increased redline. With a '99, you're SOL. Y-pipe is a must.
