So I was told I needed:

2 New Rear Rotors
Turn Front 2 Rotors
New Rear Break pads

and CarX told me they could do it for about $300.

Is it worth it? Its cold out, and I don't have a garage, but I can drive 100miles to my dad's and we can make a Saturday out of it.
I figure I could get new pads for $50. Rotors might run me about $70 each.. and I don't know what to do to turn my front rotors.. so would this be a good deal or what?

 

I would say go buy the new parts yourself, stock or upgraded stuff and do it at your dads place to save money from labor. Its a easy job that only requires a jack and some common tools.

 

Brakes are E-Z. Don't pay someone to do this simple work.

Pick up your parts, a Hayne's manual, brake hardware kit (brake pad shims), anti-squeal goo, brake parts cleaner, and make a fun, educational afternoon of it.

Btw: It's very important to follow the procedure on retracting the rear-brake pistons, so as not to damage them. (It's not hard, just needs to be done a certain way)

Search maxima.org for links to brake jobs, but def. pick up a manual. (www.amazon.com)

As far as turning the front rotors is concerned, are they warped? If they are, turning them is only a temporary solution that will get you about 5,000-9,000 miles of shudder-free braking. Unfortunately, the only true remedy for warped rotors is replacement. You can only postpone the inevitable, on this one.

If you decide to do the work yourself and you still have over 50% life in your front pads, I'd get the rotors turned and get a bit more mileage out of them. (If you're going to pay to have the work done & don't want to deal with re-warped rotors in 5-9k mi, then buy new front rotors and pads now & get it done).

Many places like Pep-Boy's will turn rotors while you wait, as long as they are not so worn that machining them will drop them below MST (Minimum Safe Thickness). Remove the rotors from the car & drive them to the service shop/chain store of your choice for turning. Cost should be $10-$15 per rotor.

If you decide to put new pads/rotors on the front, you should pick up a brake-piston compression tool from your local auto-parts store as well. ($7-$10) If you just turn the rotors, you won't need this.

where can I get rotors for less than $70/per? i found a place to get brake pads, a set for $60.. but i'm not wanting to pay $70 per rotor.. plus shipping

 

They have been several group deals on brake rotors, currently there is a group deal on rotors and pads. Search on group deal to find it.

I am with your dad, for $300 you can get 4 new rotors (cross drilled, slotted and plated) and 4 sets of pads. You'll also know it is done right! There are 2 things I never cut corners on - tires and brakes. They are the only things keeping you away from a telephone pole.

 

$70... per rotor... that is way too much. And they're gonna make you pay shipping also?!?! Oh my...

Just go to the auto stores in area... even better... call... the local auto stores and get prices on rotors. If it is a good shop, they won't charge you for shipping and should have them the next morning if they don't have em in stock. I paid... $17 ea for the front and $24.95 ea for the rear. As for pads... search the forum for "quiet brake pads" and it'll show you the best ones, I forgot the name. When you do the rear calipers, you'll need a special tool to turn the pistons and push them back into place. I found mine at Autozone for $8.99. Hope this info helps...

The tool will probably make it a lot easier, but it can also be done with a pair of needle-nose pliers if you don't get the tool.

 

There was group deal on Brembo rotors ALL 4 FOR $180 plus shipping! So you can get the 2 front rotors for $90 total. $8.00 to turn each rear rotor. Raybestos makes the Quiet Stop Pads $56 for front pads and $46.00 for rear. Including High Temp Grease, anti squeal compound, 8 new caliper pins, brake fluid, and aerosol break cleaner you are talking under $300. No way would I ever put $19 rotors on my car! Do they come pre warped?

 

300 bucks is a bit too much. I paid mine mechanic $80 for front service (pads/rotor replacement) including caliper replacement and he still felt he's charged me too much. My $0.02

 

Did you happen to notice your mechanic & his co-workers were wearing leg-irons? The doors to the shop padlocked during the 20 hour workday? Armed supervisors roaming about?

Those are sweatshop rates.

Even buying the cheapest parts available, that guy's working for practically nothing.

 

You don't ALWAYS get what you pay for... just because you pay for "high-quality" things... doesn't mean they are any higher quality than the cheaper ones, it all depends.

Nah really, the I've known the guy for a number of years now and we actually know the same people in the community. So the rate he's charging me is not the actual rate he charges his other customers. Would you believe he installed my AGX struts, Maxspeed springs and replaced both CV boots for $120! You gotta love him!

 

Rotors are rotors unless your gettin cross drilled/slotted...get the rotors from pep boys and pads from dealer you save $$$...do it your self done...like new

 

I respectfully disagree, they are all called rotors but some are significantly inferior!

 

Autozone has the rears for our cars for $27. The fronts aren't too much more. I just picked up the slotted and cross-drilled rotors for $180 for all 4 in the Group Deal forum (it's the one that says Brembo in the title). Depends on what you're going for. Either way, it will cost you waaaaaay less than $300 to do it yourself. Good luck and have fun.

 

Has anyone had bad experiences w/ Autozone rotors?? I'm a starving student so I had no choice but to buy these for dirt cheap instead of getting my rotors turned below recommended thickness. I also got the Raybestos QuietStops cause of all the good things I hear about them. So far I've driven on this combo for 3 months and I'm starting to notice a slight grumble while gradually braking for stop lights. I dont hear anything during high speed braking nor do i hear anything during very light braking(only when braking moderately). I also hear some periodic light rubbing against the rotor, probably due to excessive runout. I'm afraid of pushing my brakes to the limit cause of these cheap rotors. Has anyone had one of these Autozone rotors prematurely warp or stress crack?
