What is a knock sensor?

okie this thread probably sound very n00bie, but i did go to howstuffworks.com + search in maxima.org, it didn't give me enough information to understand, so anyone can explain in detail wat a knock sensor is? the function, the location, the price, and possible setup?

Ummm okay....you knock sensor detects if there is any "knock" occuring....in other works, senses knock...anyway, a sensor that is going bad will "think" there is knock and retard the timing, it is located pretty much under the TB, really hard to get to without having small hands.....
