It was me vs my friend's 5.0L Mustang 5speed. He got exhaust and it's loud as hell!Just the sound of it is nasty. He also got 2 12s and an amp in the back with 1 passenger when we raced. I was alone.

My car: 95 GXE auto with just FrankenCar intake.sock hubs not 17s

we raced from 15-85mph. He had the jump on me from 15mph cause he was able to down shift to 1st gear before I said go. My autotragic took like a second to downsift after I floored it. He had like 2 cars on me by the end of 1st. Then I started walking him slowly and soon he was in my rearview at 85mph. I'd say about 3 cars back.

If we raced from a dead stop I would've had like 7 cars on him by 85mph. We plan on racing again but this time with my digicam.

just thought I'd let everyone know.

uh, no. How do you know he should've won. Just cause he's 5speed doesn't mean he should've beaten me. Even with a really good driver, I still would've won. I had him by a lot. Don't forget those 5.0s are real heavy boats.

Nice! You know, I was affraid to race even a Mustang V6 (5-speed), even though I have a 5-speed. (I'm not a good stick driver yet, still new) but this gives me hope. Good stuff.

Nice! I've been hesitant to even race a V6 Mustang 5-speed, much lessa V8, even though I have a 5-speed too. But now that I hear you beat him, it gives me new hope. (I'm not a very good stick driver yet, still new). Can't wait to see the video.

If you have a 5speed Max, you should be able to **** all over v6 Mustang 5speeds. I always beat on v6 Mustang autos. but a v6 5speed should be a pretty close race with my auto depending on driver.

Oh by the way(for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about), this 5.0 that I raced was the older one not the new one's. The new one's are 4.6L I think not 5.0.

No, your friend is a crappy driver...downshifting into first says it all; that is horrible for the tranny

Yeah a downshift to fist is pretty harsh.

What year 5.slow? The 94-98 5spds do 0-60 in around 6.7 seconds, so I'd say with your light GXE and intake, you faired well against him. He would beat you off the line if he launched right.

could someone put some specs on the 5.0 5spd?
i don't think i could keep up with them, and im probably a full second faster than you in the 1/4 mile.

i used to live in this really guido hood where everyone drives stangs.
one night this blue stang 4.6 that always hangs at dunking donuts tried to pull some funny sh8t on me. i was right on his a$$ the whole way.. if it wasn't cause of the red light up ahead i would have pulled over the double yellow and attempted to pass him.. so it is not impossible.. good show man!

Props to you on your victory, but i just find it hard to believe you won, and IF you did, i know you didnt beat him by 7cars, he must have something wrong with his car, or he cant drive stick. 5.0s of the 80 and early 90s are low 15sec cars alllllllll day long. So to say you had him by that many cars is unbelieveble, esp since your an auto. You must be somewhere in the mid-upperish 15s.

5-sp V-6 mustangs are an alright match up, i can beat one by about 2 cars (from a roll 40-65). Havent tried from a stop.

I can tell you a better match up is a Grand AM GT as hard as that is to believe. A poor launch on a Max drivers part will have that GA GT drive all over you. They run mid 15s all day long.

Also to clear something up, 5.0s are not boats by any means, they only weigh 200-300 pounds give or take a few over the maxima, yet have 95lbft of torque advantage and 35hp advantage.

Re: I beat a Mustang 5.0!!!
Your friend can't drive worth a crap. Those cars in good tune run mid-high 14s at a sea level track stock. However I did beat a 4.6 GT in my se-r awhile back. Have your friend do a tuneup ditch the music and bump the timing. You should be seeing tail lights then

This thread

The 5.0 Mustang that most people talk about is the 86-93 "Fox" body Mustang. They were good for 14.7-15.6@90-95mph depending on model (GT, LX, hatchback, notchback, convertable) and tranny. These 5.0s WERE NOT overweight. Weight ranged from 2900-3300lbs depending on model and tranny. Then came the new body style Mustang in 94 which ran the 5.0 until 1995. These Stangs ran lower to mid 15s because of gain in weight of 200-250lbs and a worse flowing intake manifold. In the 1996 the Stangs went to a "modular" 4.6. In 99, Ford made revisions to the 4.6 and added a more wedgey body style. The 5.0 does not exist anymore, at least for now (Ford does have plan to make a 5.0 based on the 4.6).

As for this race, it sounds like the guy in the Stang was a worseless driver and/or his Stang is in rough shape. I was able to run my buddies 90 LX 5.0 notchback to a 14.55 in stock form and a 14.2 with muffler, weight reduction, and advanced timing. DO NOT take 5.0s lightly.

There's a 1999 Cobra down the block who's azz I kick regularly.

But no, your friend can't drive dude, or there's something wrong with his car.... He should of (and would have) smoked you if he were a better driver....or his car wasn't broke - whichever.

I agree that the 'stang should have won, by how much I don't know. My old GT (1990) 5 speed with just an exhaust (x-pipe, Flowmasters, probably like your friend's) and a K&N filter ran like 14.5 or a little faster. When I first got on the Max hard, I was surprised, but it's just not that fast. (Not yet, anyway. mwuahahaha).

Thanks for the feedback. We wanna race again when the weather gets nice. This time driver vs driver no passengers. I doubt he's gonna take the system out just for this race but I'll try to talk him into it.

That race really shocked me. I thought he would destroy me by far. I think it was the sound of his car that got me. Damn that thing sounds beastly

No.

I raced a "Five point Oh" last night at the track. He had at least exhaust, it was loud as hell.

I was a tenth fast at the 60' mark and I ended up beating him:

15.1 @ 90 versus his 15.4 @ 95

I beat Mustangs on a regular basis at the race track.

Clearly this 5.0 was much stronger than your Maxima. Look at the trap speed difference. 5 mph is about 50-60hp. It looks to me like he spun horribly thru 1st and into 2nd. 95mph trap speeds are easy 14.6s with a 2.2 60'.

from a stand still, a 5.0 GT auto with shift kit, intake, exhaust will absolutly murder me. from a 15 mph roll, i'm pacing right next to him. and this is my buddy so i know for sure that he is a good driver and what his car can do. my guess is a high to mid 14 on good tires.

he had a 2.3 60'

his 1/8 was 10.2 @ 74.4

He was catching up, but not as quickly as most do.

i trapped a 95mph...but only got a 15.1 with an intake..
but something doesn't seem right with the stangs time...
they usually have really powerful low end, while choaking up top
but this one looks to have bad low end and incredible high end power
a stang that pulls a 95mph trap should be ripping an auto 4th gen apart.

I beat my exwife in her 96 stang. She cant drive either. Too bad I didnt race her for custody of my son! She has an auto and I have a 5 speed 99 gle, no mods . . . yet.

Im assuming yours is very modded. VERY modded..

Cuz if not, it was a v6 with cobra badges buddy

Eric

PS: WTF is anyone even comparing stangs to Maxs anyways?!?

It had to have been a V-6 with badges because if you insist that it was an auto it wasn't a cobra, SVT doesn't build cars with an automatic transmission.

Question for you-were you a 5 speed and him an auto. I owned an Auto 93 5.0 and it was a mid 15 sec car. I also had a 5 speed and that was a high 14 sec car. Both 100% stock. Also a lot of guys are referencing late 90s 5.0. They don't exist. 95 was the last 5.0. Then they went to the 4.6 and were slow until 99.

Be careful racing 5.0s b/c they will take your lunch money. Most are built. i raced a guy at the track and he did a 7 sec 1/8 mile run. A little quicker and he woulda beat me.

No they arent they are like 3,400 lbs, his car must have a **** load of miles on it and lost all its *****. But still nice job beating a mustang is still beating a mustang. But from a stop he would get you, since they have a good amout of torque to get them off the line

WOW A COMPLIMENT RATHER THAN A "HE WAS A BAD DRIVER" Thanks man

He probably is a bad driver tho. He got his licinse in December so he's only been driving stick for like 2months. I guess that explains why he downsifted to 1st at 15mph.

Come on man I'm not that stupid. I know they're quick cars.

We actually tried racing today from a launch but all we did was spin and spin. It's too wet out. this week is supposed to be nice.

We've had this discussion about two billion times, and every other time the thread ended up locked.

I'm with Ben on this one...most 5.0/4.6 stangs aint all that. I've beat on them over and over again at the track. Everyone talks about 14 sec stock like its nothing. I've run them at the track at least 10-15 times both stock and modded. The only ones that got in the 13-14 range were either modded or real cobras. The rest are all 15 secs at best.

All I'm going to say is this: Modded stangs are tough. Some done correctly are really really tough. Most teeny bopper stangs are all bark and no bite. In my car, I would run any and all of them. I got beat by cobra at the track once, but he didn't embarass me. Most 5.0/4.6 are nothing more than a drop in K&N and some Flowmasters....that aint nothing to be scared of. You wanna worry about something, worry about a modded WRX/EVO 8/300TT/etc. Those cars can stay completely quiet and stock looking but still put the smack down on somebody.

BTW, Dave B....where in the world are you getting your figures from? 5mph=50-60hp more? I know for a fact that a fellow org member and I dyno'd our cars the same day on the same machine, and our dyno numbers were only 20-25hp diff. Our same two cars ran at the track and ran 13.3 vs 13.8 and 108 vs 103. So from personal exp. you're figures don't add up. Just want to know where you got the numbers from.
