My strut bearings have been clunking and popping for a while. They do this as I turn the wheel from lock to lock. I didnt think much of it, except now the bearings are so bad that it makes the car hard to align. has anyone else had this happen? How much did you pay to get them replaced?

Strut bearings? Do you mean half-shaft CV joints? You can get remanufactured half-shafts for about $150 per side. You can do them yourself if you have right tools and enough ability to change your own struts.

dont even remind me, i changed mine 2 times. The jack-a$$ who did my suspension never changed them for me when i had the car lowered. Then the driver side went bad after a month, then the passanger side another month after that. So maybe 6months later they both went again. I asked th guy who did the work what brand he was using, he told me some aftermarket brand. I was sooo pisssed and i had him change them both with OEM Nissan parts and they have been fine ever since.

Sounds like CV joints to me. Check to see if you have cracked or leaking CV boots (grease will be all over them). Also, another possibility is worn upper strut mounts. This can also cause the characteristic chattering sound when turning, or at least it did on my old VW.

No, it's not CV joints. It's the upper strut bearings. How much do the OEM parts cost, ny96maxse??

A strut bearing noise will be heard as you crank the steering wheel from lock to lock while the car is stationary. A CV joint will make it's characteristic clicking or snapping noises only while the car is in motion.

I had the same problem with my muffler bearings. That was after I replaced the water pump on my old Beetle.

The bearing on your struts where it mounts to the frame/body. There is a bearing that allows your strut to turn left or right and it is probably wearing out. This involves removing the strut/spring assembly and using a spring compressor and taking off the strut mount/bearing assembly and replacing it.

Funny.......

I was posting about this noise for months....all summer long.....and NOBODY knew what it was Anyway....it seems to go away in cold weather....I haven't heard it since October. The dealer quoted me I think 319 parts and labor for both front bearing plates..och!

If you do it yourself you will already have the spring compressor, you might as well do them both.
