235/40/18 on a 18x7.5 wheel?
235/40/18 on a 18x7.5 wheel?
Is anybody running this combo? I ordered some 18x7.5's with 235/40/18 from tire rack last night and they called this morning and said that that tire was too wide for the wheel. He recomended a 215/45/18 which sounds too narrow to me. The funny thing is when you look at the website the recomended tire for that wheel is a 235/40/18 but he said they could not sell it to me for safety reasons
But I have a friend with a 93 cobra with 17x7.5 stock wheels running a 245. So what is the deal???

Well we talked to tire rack and we had to order the tires and wheels separate which sux because I'll have to get them mounted and balanced when they get here. Tire rack said that it was not safe to run the 235 on a 7.5" wheel so they could not sell them as a set or mount and balance them for legal and liability purposes. But anyway I will have the 235's
just kind of a pain in the ***.
I'm not sure what my offset is,I just went by tire rack website to select the rims. Where did you order your rims from?
Cool,Thanks Iilac I didn't think there would be a problem but it's nice to hear that someone is running that combo with no problems.

I would like to know this as well, as I just ordered some 18 x 7.5's, with an offset of 42 mm, and they said the reccommended tire size was 235/40/18, what's your offset?
I have 18x7.5 and I am running 235/40/18 tires on it. No problem whatsoever. You will be fine.
When I bought my wheels, 18x7.5, they had 225/40/18 tires on them. I ordered the same size tires from tire rack and they called me and recommended 235/40/18 because of the size of the car.
Sounds like a mistake. Make sure they have the right info on your car.

Yes there is nothing wrong with 235's on a 7.5" thick rim.
Tirereack recommends 235/40/18 because they come pretty close to having the same diameter as the 215/60/15's or the 215/55/16 stock tires that the maxima has on them.
Plus people like wider tires. Now if your rim width was 7 then definitely go with 225.

I drive with 18*7.5 42 offset rims and 235/40/18 tires. No problem here. The kumho tires seem to be pretty much flush with the edges of the rim, you don't get that bulging look some tires have. I have had experiences with differences in tire bulging even though they are the same rated size. One set bulged out more and rubbed the fender well while the other set didn't on my previous car. Good luck.

If you look at 245/40/18, 8.5 is well within the alotted range. (In fact, it's the measuring width.) 235/40/18 is listed between 8 and 9.5. But people have worked with narrower, so whatever.

225 is too small.. your speedo will be off.. you will dent a rim in no time..
235/40 is the best size to go with

however that increases by 2% as you go faster.. so going 100 mph might show anywhere from 110 mph to 115 mph on your speedo

235 is too much tire. I have 235s on my 17 X 7.5s and it is not an ideal setup. What happens is that the kumhos that i have pull up at the edges slightly as they seat into the rim, this reduces the contact patch, causing poor straight line driving characteristics on the highway as well as diminished turn in and overall handling. Next time I will go with 225s in the proper aspect ratio.
Note that if you look at the front tires on most expensive high performance cars, manuf. like BMW, Porsche, etc, they "overstuff" the front tires -- really wide rims, tires at the very maximum spec of narrowness...
