235/40/18 on a 18x7.5 wheel?

Is anybody running this combo? I ordered some 18x7.5's with 235/40/18 from tire rack last night and they called this morning and said that that tire was too wide for the wheel. He recomended a 215/45/18 which sounds too narrow to me. The funny thing is when you look at the website the recomended tire for that wheel is a 235/40/18 but he said they could not sell it to me for safety reasons But I have a friend with a 93 cobra with 17x7.5 stock wheels running a 245. So what is the deal???

I would like to know this as well, as I just ordered some 18 x 7.5's, with an offset of 42 mm, and they said the reccommended tire size was 235/40/18, what's your offset?

Well we talked to tire rack and we had to order the tires and wheels separate which sux because I'll have to get them mounted and balanced when they get here. Tire rack said that it was not safe to run the 235 on a 7.5" wheel so they could not sell them as a set or mount and balance them for legal and liability purposes. But anyway I will have the 235's just kind of a pain in the ***.

I'm not sure what my offset is,I just went by tire rack website to select the rims. Where did you order your rims from?

Cool,Thanks Iilac I didn't think there would be a problem but it's nice to hear that someone is running that combo with no problems.

When I bought my wheels, 18x7.5, they had 225/40/18 tires on them. I ordered the same size tires from tire rack and they called me and recommended 235/40/18 because of the size of the car.

Sounds like a mistake. Make sure they have the right info on your car.

According to tire manufacturers' specs, you need a minimum of 8" width for a 235/40/18 tire.

235/40 18 will fit on that 7.5 rim, so dont worry about it. Purchase them, mount them and enjoy them

Yes there is nothing wrong with 235's on a 7.5" thick rim.
Tirereack recommends 235/40/18 because they come pretty close to having the same diameter as the 215/60/15's or the 215/55/16 stock tires that the maxima has on them.
Plus people like wider tires. Now if your rim width was 7 then definitely go with 225.

I also have 235/40s on 18x7.5s no problems here. No bulging either.

I drive with 18*7.5 42 offset rims and 235/40/18 tires. No problem here. The kumho tires seem to be pretty much flush with the edges of the rim, you don't get that bulging look some tires have. I have had experiences with differences in tire bulging even though they are the same rated size. One set bulged out more and rubbed the fender well while the other set didn't on my previous car. Good luck.

Here's Bridgestone's spec for the S-03:

http://www.bridgestonetire.com/dpp/s...sproductid=227

If you look at 245/40/18, 8.5 is well within the alotted range. (In fact, it's the measuring width.) 235/40/18 is listed between 8 and 9.5. But people have worked with narrower, so whatever.

I almost went with a kumho because I thought they ran small but we went with the yokohama avs es 100 because my wife liked the tread pattern better. I'm not sure how the yokohamas run as far as size so I'm a little concerned but I don't think it will be a big deal. On my cobra I have ran a summitomo 275/40/17 and a nitto 275/40/17 and the summitomos were alot wider. Oh well I guess I'll find out in a few days. Thanks

225 is too small.. your speedo will be off.. you will dent a rim in no time..

235/40 is the best size to go with

when you are going 60 mph it shows 61.6 mph...

however that increases by 2% as you go faster.. so going 100 mph might show anywhere from 110 mph to 115 mph on your speedo

your friend is running 245 on 17x7.5 maybe due to the fact his stock rims / speedo are calibrated to run that for 17 inch rims..

235 is too much tire. I have 235s on my 17 X 7.5s and it is not an ideal setup. What happens is that the kumhos that i have pull up at the edges slightly as they seat into the rim, this reduces the contact patch, causing poor straight line driving characteristics on the highway as well as diminished turn in and overall handling. Next time I will go with 225s in the proper aspect ratio.

Note that if you look at the front tires on most expensive high performance cars, manuf. like BMW, Porsche, etc, they "overstuff" the front tires -- really wide rims, tires at the very maximum spec of narrowness...

The Maxima special too. If it wasn't I wouldn't keep modding it.

how is that going to **** up my car? if you ahve 45s on your car you have more of a chance bending you rims and having a 235 on will give you more width, so you wont bend you rims// is that what you mean? then in that case its true... about the speed being off... just didnt think about it but you are right in that part but that still dosent give you the right to be an ***.
