cold air intake?

So after realizing changing the air filter on my '96 stock Maxima is a real pain in the patookas, the idea of a cold air intake was brought up. The main question I have is--Is a hole in the wheel-well really nesessary, are there any other places that it could be routed but still be effective? I've always been a "replace stock with stock, if it was supposed to be that way it would have come from the factory like that" type of person, but this doesn't seem like a bad idea except for the hole. And please bear with me, I'll be the first to admit that I can change my oil, and that is about it! Afterall, what are fathers for?!
Thanks for your input,
Carrie

For a true cold air intake, yes you need to make a 3" hole in the fender. However you can make a hybrid intake without making any real modifications

be fore warned...that your probably going to be told to "Search" but to give you a better idea of what to search for, I will help ya out. Many people have the CAI (Cold Air Intake) system, and love it. But lately alot of people have been installing the already mentioned "Hybrid" intake. You can make it yourself, but myself along with MANY others on this board have chosen Frankencar for an intake. www.frankencar.com . This is not a CAI system, meaning it is not getting the air from the ouside the fender. So, that will give you a good start...search for Frankencar, hybrid, or custom intake, stillen intake. By the way...you were having problems changing your Air Box Panel Filter? All you have to do is unclasp the 4 little metal claims that hold the top of the box on, and your looking right at the filter.

I just put on another intake today, and I had a girl asking why I was fixing my car, and what broke. I told her that nothing broke, I just like making the car perform better. She couldn't understand why I would take a perfectly good car, and "fix" stuff.

Yeah, i was waiting for the "do a search" response, but that would be easier if i knew what i was searching for, thanks for the input. i think it sounds like a good small project for the b/f--not his money or his car, he shouldn't mind.

Search for Injen CAI, it requires no drilling and is tight!
