You only need to push the clutch pedal in until the clutch disengages from the flywheel. Depending on how your pedal is adjusted, that could be all the way to the floor or only half-way. If it completely disengages at the half-way to the floor point, there is nothing more to be gained by pushing the pedal the rest of the way to the floor. The transmission doesn't care if there is one inch of separation between the clutch and the flywheel or only .1".

To an extent but as long as the clutch is disengaging then it doesn't matter. If it is not disengaged and you shift the shifter will kind of pop out of gear and may or may not go into the gear you are trying to put it in. Either way you'll know it if the clutch is engaged at all.

ok.....here is another thing though.....when i shift to 1-ST gear i sometimes hear the sound that is not supposed to be there, other shifting is fine. it's not me doing something wrong, it's defenatly something else. any ideas on this would help, thanks. oh and the car feels kinda weak in 1-ST.

If your in another gear and want to shift to first you really should stop first or slow to a crawl. If you are stopped and still have an issue. Put the car in a another gear like 3rd and then back into first, it may help. Of course the clutch should be pressed when changing your gears

As for your first question. Since you are new at the 5 speed, you should depress the clutch all the way to the floor until your get better acqainted with the car. Then you can cheat a little bit depending on your cars clutch (every car is a little different).

i am not down-shifting, i am shifting from neutral to 1 and sometimes it makes this noise which i can only hear if the radio is off. i am not a bad 5-speed driver, and i don't stall, i can drive 5-speed, it's just my first manual car. oh and i can avoid the noise by pressing the cluch in a different way but the way i am doing it the car still should't make that noise.
