She's DEAD

She's DEAD
Well, it wasn't the camshaft or crankshaft position sensors.. wasn't the fuel pump or filter.. looks like the timing chain jumped, and the valves are possibly bent. The mechanic is looking at her now. In any case... anyone selling a motor
I guess if I get a new motor, I'll be driving this Max for another 5 years.

Since I'm going all the way, what do you guys think I should get? What's the newest engine I can buy, 97? 98? I really can't remember. I think since I'm going to dish out all the cash, I might as well have them overhaul my car.
-New shocks, especially stiff ones. Any suggestions?
-New muffler (nothing loud). Suggestions?
Anything else I can put on there? I'm not trying to go all out, but since I'll need to make this car last for at least 5 more years, I'd like it to be as close to new as I can

I'd love that, but 3k is a bit out of my budget. My mechanic quotes up to 2500 for used engine + install, so I found a few engines for under 1k with less than 20k miles on them. Here's what I gotta know:
-Is there a difference if I get an engine from a GXE/GLE/SE?
-MT vs AT? (Does it matter?)
-Some have compression rating on them (i assume that's what 185 or 200 or whatever PSI means) What am I looking for?
Thanks for any help

The engines are the same except for the ECU which is different for a 5-speed and a auto. As for shocks, I like both the KYB GR2 and the AGX. As for the muffler, go with either a Apexi or an OBX if you are on a tight budget.

Did you see them anywhere in particular, or just around? I went to carparts.com (I thinK) and found one for $650 12k miles in my state. Should I make sure I get one with warranty? What else should I make sure?
Sorry about all the questions everyone, but I really need to make sure that this is a sound investment

My friend is concerned that the mechanic is trying to rip me off.. he said that if it was the timing chain, then either the starter would freewheel or freeze (it doesn't). He thinks it's electrical. has anyone ever had to replace a timing chain here?

I was thinking the same thing - chances are that it's something completely different.

The final outcome
So here's what they found: No compression, but spark and fuel is coming into the cylander. The chain is "all f*ed up". I was in a hurry, so I didn't ask for details. I'll find out tomorrow.
I'm getting a new engine, the one with 12k on it can't be delivered until a week from Monday, but one with 44k on it will be delivered tomorrow. Since I can't function much without my car, I went with the 44k one (out of a 98). I guess I have a few hours to tell them to stop, so if anyone thinks this is a bad idea, lemme know
