I was wondering how all the people who have Window tints
get around to pass inspection every two years. I guess one can get the "cheap" kind, which costs like $100 bucks and have it turn purple in a year, peel the tints off, and get new ones. But does anyone have the "real" tints, which use a profesional film like 3M, and also cost $200.00+ to install with lifetime warranty. Those are hard to peel off, thus making one fail inspection. Any tips? just wondering. Also, what do you guys think of "bronze" tints on a gold maxima as opposed to having black?
thanks in advance,
John

Tint has to do with inspection here in TX. You can get a ticket for having tint that is too dark, but usually they won't mess with you. If your tint is too dark you won't get your inspection sticker though. I think the regulation is somewhere in the neighborhood of 35% for the front windowsand 25 on the back windows.

In some states if you have the two front windows tinted you won't pass inspection. That is if you go to a state inspection station. If you go to a private place, like a gas station or garage, they will pass you because tint is something that could have been added at any time. You should check with the place first to make sure because private places want $$ for inspections and it could be a lot.

What state do you live in , that they do window inspection ? I have never heard of that...But if I was you I'd go 20%..But like it was posted in another thread before it depends on the interior of your car.. you might not have to go so dark if your interior is dark..Dark interior will make your tint look darker.. Just some suggestions..

NJ regulations

Whats the legal % that you can have in NJ? I know that you can't have anything in the front, but what about for the back?

Any percent on the other windows. The front two windows and the windshield can't be tinted.

BTW I would go with 20% tint. 35% looks to light. 5% is hard to see at night, but does look good. I have a black max with black interior and 20% looks nice. If you get it tinted, get all the windows tinted (not the windshield though) If you don't have the two front windows tinted it looks wierd, like a limo.

TINT

In Missouri, the law is that you can have 35% tint and still pass inspection. In order to have anything darker, you have to get a note from your eye doctor (which is EXTREMELY easy). Then the highway Patrol gives you a little sticker for your windshield and back glass, then they know who not to mess with.
It costs a little--but not much. It is worth it!
I got my entire car tinted for $160.

cool! but interesting... what a loophole, anybody could just wear sunglasses and not need tint, so that is a weird justification

yea

in NJ you cant tint your front windows at all, back ones theres no limit. I'm going 20% in the rear's and 35% on the front driver/passanger. Black max with black leather and the back tinted at 20%, the 35% in the front blends in.

Thanks guys for all of your suggestions. NJ is a F***cked up state. You can fail inspection here big time if you tint the front windows. On top of that we have the highest insurance rates in the country. Anyway, I will take my chances and go to a private inspection facility, and pay whatever I have to. I will go with 25% tint (have to go dark cause the inside is light beige color) all around and hope to pass.

Here in Hawaii to pass safety inspection you can't have tint darker than 35%. When I had my 5% I had to get it through friends who know inspection people. It was a pain in the @$$ and I got over $400 worth of tickets once for tint (ticket for each window!) so I took it off

Get it inspected, then tinted

or

Get it tinted, then get it privately inspected

or

Get it tinted, rip off the tint, get it inspected, get it re-tinted

Not much else you can do. Compair different tinted cars. Those with the front two tinted and those without the front two tinted. You can also compair darkness, maybe ask what % they have. See what you like and what you want to do about inspection

I think NY is like 25% for the fronts anything behind. It's something like you have be able to see the silhouette of a person from 200' away in daylight in the front window. Something like that.

If you really want to tint your front windows-

You can try using 3M neutral 50. It's pretty much invisible or you can use 3M neutral 70 which IS invisible. I used that on my windshield. It helps reduce glare a bit and protects from UV.

It's nice to have a shop you know.

When I got my car inspected, the guy walked out, looked at the odometer, signed the slip, and then started aking me all kinds of questions about my steering wheel and dash kit. May people like us always be able to find shops like these!
