Door Lock won't turn

I can't turn my driver's door lock with the key. I can however open it from the inside. It gradually got tougher and tougher to turn the lock with the key until yesterday I tried to open it with two different keys and no luck at all. I sprayed wd-40 in the key hole but it still won't turn. Anybody got any ideas or suggestions.

Is it cold there? Since you said it gradualy got harder and harder to turn, I am guessing this isn't the problem. However, yesterday I couldn't get into my car because the lock was frozen. So I poured warm water on it and it opened right up.?..?..?

Re: Re: Door Lock won't turn

Yeah it's been freezing (plenty of ice) here but I had this problem before the ice started, however I could at least open the door with the key until yesterday.
Perhaps the ice is a contributing factor but it is only my drivers side door; never had a problem with passenger side door in any weather.

I can't remember the last time I actually stuck my key in the keyhole. How primitive...

I just ordered a new keypad from www.keylessride.com
should be here in 2 or 3 days. They are much more reasonable than the Dealer, of course most people usually are.

You said you tried WD-40, huh? That's what I would have recommended. This happened to me recently on my commuter car. The driver side just wouldn't turn. It had just started raining for the first time in a while here so I blamed it on the rain. Sure enough. Next sunny day it worked. It was tough but it worked. At that point I soaked it with W-D. I sprayed my key, I stuck the red straw in the keyhole and soaked the inside, twisting it and shooting different angles... you get the point. Now it works fine. So I hate to say the answer to your question is 'you need to get it to work in order to get it to work' - lol. Chicken and egg. Has it rained recently? Did you actually stick the straw inside?

Yeah, I once had almost the exact scenario you described and the WD-40 worked but this time I have flooded that key hole with WD--40 and it still won't turn. (Yes, I did use the little red straw, lol )

They sell lock lubricants, I use that on my cars with no problem.

For winter, they also have lock deicers, has a little nozzle you stick in to the key cylinder and spray, wait a bit and then try it with a key. The deicer is only about $1, not expensive at all and might do the trick.

Definitely lubricate the door lock once the weather warms up.

I looked for a lock deicer late last night at Wal-Mart but they didn't have it. I have lubricated the hell out of that thing and now the weather should be warming up in the next couple days, maybe that will remedy it; sure hope so. Anyway I finally stopped procrastinating and ordered a remote keypad, that's the way to go for sure. Thanks for all the responses; makes me feel like I'm not alone.

Good luck with it.

Have you tried opening your rear door? Man, the check links in the older 4th gens seize up so badly when it's cold.

The back doors don't have exterior key locks, so I don't need a key to open them. I can open the back doors from the interior with no problem. It's only the driver's door I have a problem with; I can open the driver's door easily from inside just not with the key. I hope warmer weather solves the situation; I'll be glad to see the sun.

Sorry, went OT ... wasn't referring to the key locks but the check link ... you know, the bar that connects the door to the body and prevents you from hitting the hinge limit in the event you pushed the door to the maximum or it got caught by the wind.

Mine will barely move now, and makes an awful scraping sound

I need warmth, so I can lubricate that sucker.

form a locksmith

cause i am one it could be 1 of 2 things 1 and most likely you have a bent waffer inside of your lock you can take it to a lock smith or you can take the lock out and to a lock smith and he can fix it for less than 15 bucks or your ACTUATOR (the little motor that locks and unlocks your door) is bad .

PS NEVER,EVER,EVER spray WD-40 in a lock it is a wax base lub it will revert to wax and that is bad for a lock ,always use a silicone based lub please for the love of locks.

Re: form a locksmith

You got the old gray matter jump started now, I hadn't even considered going to a locksmith. Thx. The actuator is probably ok since I can open the door with the controls inside I would think. If this thing doesn't turn with the key in the next couple days (and I doubt it now) that's exactly what I will do.

Try some WD40 in your door luck. Sometimes it helps.

Well, i would take of your door panel and have a look for yourself, i had to do that last week in the damn cold. My passenger door wouldn't close right inside, and would mess up my entire power lock system. Cause it was jammed inside the door lock system, one of the wires wasn't attached right or somthing. But it works fine now. Just have a look for yourself, best way to find out whats wrong, plus you leanr a thing or two.
