Do i get CEL for Every............

would I get CEL for every sensor that could be bad, or when there is a major problem with that sensor? or only some sensor make the cel to go on? would every sensor cause the CEL to go on?

Please if you know about this post here.
Thanks In advance.

From my understanding, you might not receive a CEL for every sensor that *could* be bad. For example I had a LH heated 02 sensor that was definately dead, and got no CEL. So, I suspect that it depends on the sensor and problem.

First of all - The CEL rarely means the affected sensor is bad - it 90% of the time means something else is wrong. Dealers LOVE to replace sensors when they see a code in addition to fixing the problem itself, because it makes them more money.....as of yet, I have only ever seen 1 CEL Code that actually was a bad sensor - and this was ebmorgan's Knock Sensor, which doesn't even flash a CEL - you have to pull the codes to actually see it. If the CEL was in conjunction with some other code (EGR, Fuel, O2, etc...) then I wouldn't think his KS is bad, I would think his plugs were fouled, EGR bad, vacuum leak, etc, etc)

You should ALMOST never have to actually replace a sensor.

Second - The ECU is as far as I know, plugged into every sensor, with the exception of the idiot lights you already have (Oil pressure, Battery, Seatbelt Light, E-Brake)

Just last night my CEL came on, this morning I went to diagnose it. It came back with a 0304 and 0707. So my Knock Sensor and Rear Heated O2 Sensor. I'm going to replace the Knock Sensor since I just got this car used (D'oh!).

I hope it doesn't come on forever for the Rear O2 sensor though.. heh.

IanS,

So from what you're saying, maybe I should look first before replacing? I'm almost certain the KS on this '96 Max hasn't been touched since it was first purchased (Feb '96). Near 150,000KM on it, so I'm just going to replace it.

Have any input on the Rear Heated O2 Sensor (0707 Code) that came up as well? Both codes came together.. And I'm thinking the KS is more important than the RH O2 Sensor.

The KS code, when tripped with another code (like the O2 Sensor) usually means the KS is fine.

You engine is knocking, and most likely you are running rich or lean. This may be several things.

Most likely - plugs, PCV Valve, vacuum leak, or dirty O2 sensor.

I bet you both your O2 Sensor and KS are fine. I especially bet your KS is fine. The O2 sensor, like I said, may be dirty, but I bet it's not dead.

First, I'd try to remove the O2 Sensor, clean it it brake cleaner, then re-install it. That may clear all your codes. If it doesn't, try the other suggestions above.

Just to be 100%, you could also try getting a multimeter and testing the voltage on the sensors - I bet they read within spec.

Buy a Chilton's manual and go to town.

I had the cel come on the other day at exaclty 72,000 and i thought it was wierd to be at that exact millage...so i did some checking around and there is a recall to be done on 96 and probly other 4th gen's to that involes the sensor so you might want to cheak and see if you have had that done yet....they can run the vin # over the phone and see for you

Buy a Chilton's Manual - $20.00 at your local Auto Parts store, and start from there.

Hmm question.... When you say plugs, your simply refering to the spark plugs i assume? or? For the vacuum leak... where would I have to look to find this leak?

Just trying to find answers to codes i pulled today:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=197232

0303 0304

Thanks

Spark plugs, and vacuum hoses going into the manifold.

They're all over the place.
